  • With there being reports of all contact lenses being similar and that we are being ripped off by the manufacturers....how long can...monthly lenses be worn? I hope somebody can help me with this. Thanks. Also can "ordinary" lenses be worn as an extended wear lens.

I've been wearing various types of soft contact lens for over 20 years. I'm not an optician. All I can say is that I've been wearing the same pair of 'monthly' lens for 7 months now, and still counting. It works for me with these particular lens, AMO Aquavision. When I tried it with Frequency 55 I didn't get much beyond 2 months. I can't possibly recommend the approach for others. You need to be very careful, be thorough with cleaning and cleanliness, and have your own view of risk, removing the lens if there's discomfort or if it looks dirty. Then I'm told there are plenty of 'invisible' deposits which can only be seen under a microscope. So I am going to buy a microscope when I get around to it. The downside is that you could have serious complications or worse.

Never wear general lens as 'extended wear', i.e. never sleep in them. They don't allow enough oxygen to the cornea, for a start. I wouldn't even wear proper extended wear lens whilst I'm asleep. I consider it a risk too far. How lazy can you get? To avoid taking them out at night. My eyes are far too precious.

So, in summary, my stance is that I view wearing a one month lens for up to a year, as a risk worth taking, and the normal use of 'extended wear' lens to live and sleep in for a whole month, as a risk too far, which I would never contemplate. Most people would view it the other way round.

Finally, here's a very interesting debate on the subject of wearing disposable lens for longer than the manufacturers recommend. If the link takes you part way down the web page, please be sure to go to the top of the page to read from the start:

With there being reports of all contact lenses being similar and that we are being ripped off by the manufacturers ( maybe marketing companies is moe appropriate) then how long can we use them for. Therefore can anybody tell me (or have I missed some posts as it can be difficult to navigate this site) how long can:-

    daily lenses be worn:

    weekly lenses be worn:

    bi-monthly lenses be worn:

    monthly lenses be worn:

I hope somebody can help me with this. Thanks.

Also can "ordinary" lenses be worn as an extended wear lens.

Perhaps those are the outside limits assuming some total * who doesn't really clean, ie effectively does not clean?!
  • Just ordered some contact lenses from http://www.coastalcontacts.co.uk, and despite them saying that delivery is free, taxes are inclusive, and prices are in British pounds, I got charged £4.30 in taxes, and £4.99 for postage. These charges didn't show up BEFORE I paid, only after my order had been processed. How kind!

I've rung them up to cancel, which they have agreed to (or at least they say they will refund). I've then rung up my credit card company who have authorised a payment for even more than the original amount, due to the fact they've charged me in Canadian dollars, despite their website saying British Pounds!

What can I do about this?

My daughter is trying out a weeks supply from Specsavers. What I am trying to ascertain is if the NHS voucher that children get towards their glasses can be used towards contact lenses? Specsavers were very vague about this. Does anyone know if it can be used or not?

    Thanks for your help
  • Unfortunately - the NHS voucher for children does not cover contact lenses.
My daughter has also just started wearing them and could not be covered by the voucher

My best suggestion would be to sort out the mess with Coastal Contacts and then place all future orders with your nearest (large Asda) branch of Asda Opticians. The last time I was at Asda, their contact lens prices were as low as mail order and the professional care is effectively free. The professional care must be worth having, even if you have to pay a bit more, and I'm not sure you do.

  • I have been looking online for the cheapest place to buy contacts and am sorted on that count, but the solutions confuse me. I am pretty new to contacts and currently have the specsavers solution, but are they all the same? Where is the cheapest place to buy solution?

Could I ask where you bought your lense from?
