This probably isn't the right place, but I want to get contacts! But I can't go to my normal optician as I'm away at uni. What would be the best thing to do?!

  • Does anyone know where I can get cheap gas permeable lenses?

Go to a local optician in the area where you currently live? Or am I missing a trick?
  • The 3 Months Disposable Price Guide:

Here is a price comparison between two of the most popular daily disposable contact lenses. The Johnson and Johnson 1 Day Acuvue which also has some level of UV protection and Ciba Visions Focus Dailies. This is based on 90 pairs (180 Lenses) 3 months solid use. The prices were checked on the 12th March 05.

All prices include postage charges where charged. However do check that if they come from outside the UK that the company will ensure you will not receive any Custom charges, even large UK firms sometimes post form the states on their web direct ordering.

You are however entitled by law to your Sight Test presciption (for glasses) immediately after an Eye Test- which is different!

I always have my eyes tested at a particular high-street chain of opticians, I hate them but as my company is paying for the test I have to go there. They ALWAYS "forget" to supply the script, naturally I always remind them. They then reluctantly and with bad grace give it to me and without fail over the last five yearly visits they make sure there are plenty of crossings out and bad handwriting so it's no use. Then I have to give it back to them to do it again. Basically they are shysters, they want me to buy their overpriced bits of glass on the spot rather than get them for half of that off the internet.

  • I've just bought some 1-Day Acuvue Disposable lenses from https://www.contactlenses.co.uk - I shopped around a bit and found them on 'Froogle' the shopping website of Google. I only buy small quantities as I only wear my lenses occasionally. I even treated myself to some coloured lenses for a change.

    1 box 1 Day Acuvue (box 30) £15.32
    1 box 1 Day Acuvue Colours (box 10) £12.77
    Free delivery

The lenses arrived two days after I placed the order, well packaged, with invoice/receipt, business card (they are based in Bristol) and free sample of eye drops.

Had an eyesight test today, and decided to go back to lenses.. so made the most of the 30 day Specsavers trial....

Confused as to what I need to order if getting them from else where as all my prescription says is:

    R - Sph - 075 Cyl - 025 Axis 35

    L - Sph - 050 Syl - 050 Axis 75

They have not written anything underneath about contact lens specifications....

It's all foreign to me... can anyone decipher it or do I have to ring up ?

R & L Sph is the figure to look at when buying contact lenses. Looks like you have only recently started to wear specs by the low figures in your Spheres. So R= -0.75 , L= -0.50 for you.

I'm -3.25 and -3.00. Been wearing glasses for 13yrs+ and contacts also. Getting my eyes laser on 16th April, cannot wait :)

This looks like your basic prescription for spectacles. Ignoring astigmatism, the only relevant figures for contact lens are the sphere (power) of R 0.75 and L 0.50. But the contact lens power could change depending on the exact brand of lens, e.g. it might well become R 1.00 and L 0.75.

But these figures are so low, it hardly seems worth wearing lens!

For contact lens you also need a prescription for base curve, i.e. to fit the curve of your eye. Now, many lens manufacturers are concentrating on a base curve 8.6 with a sort of 'one size fits all' policy. But one size doesn't fit everyone, so you really need an optician to check the fit.

    I hope this is useful.

    Regards
    George
