    Proevo21 is simply saying........

"DON'T MESS ABOUT WITH YOUR EYES, COZ THEY ARE THE ONLY PAIR YOU HAVE AND IT WILL HURT YOU LOTS IF YOU NEED MEDICAL ASSISTANCE TO REMEDY SOMETHING WHICH COULD HAVE BEEN PREVENTED"

    I think.

And I agree, first hand experience, except I didn't get to the pain stage.

(Proevo21, please check your right hand ring finger position on the keyboard - you seem to be hitting the "k" instead of the "l" a lot!) ;)

    >hi everyone - if you have optemetrist related questions, >please ask me

It sounds like you probably know what you are talking about but what are your qualifications, please?

    >george_bray, please discard any leftover solution after >recommended usage time as you do not want to get an >ulcer. It’s very painful and sight threatening....

Again, I’m sure this is good advice but you jump from the suggestion to the potential dire consequences without explaining how residual 3% hydrogen peroxide solution (only) becomes so dangerous soon or immediately after the recommended 3 month open period. Manufacturers are cautious. That must mean it’s really safe to be left open for longer in the cool UK climate, in the unlikely event that you ever need to. Also, my bottle with the cap on in the UK is probably better protected, than someone else’s bottle with the cap left off in a hot climate for 2 months.

Summary of my risky approach (which works for me as a cost saving measure):
    1. Wearing standard 1-2 year soft lens for up to 5 years
    2. Wearing monthly lens for up to 6 months
    3. Treated with hyrdogen peroxide every 3 days
    4. Always using hydrogen peroxide within the shelf life and ‘open period’ guidelines, so the above debate is a bit of a red herring.
    5. The neutralizer is always fresh from sealed vials.

Good luck to you George :o If you are happy doing this, then fine, but I don't think you should be advocating it on this website. When I mentioned your approach to my optician he said it was extremely dangerous. He's been my optician for years - I no longer buy my lenses from his company, he makes no financial gain from me, and I trust his opinion.

Personally I will continue to "throw my money away" on dailies rather than risk my eyesight. My father had a recent scare with his eyes (almost lost his sight due to a necessary routine operation) and the upset that caused, made me vow to never take any risks with my own eyes again.

IMHO, healthy eyes are far more important than saving money :-/

Actually, my approach is based on the care regime recommended to me by my optician over 20 years ago. She worked as a consultant at a London teaching hosital, so I have the highest confidence in her. She has never withdrawn the advice on cleaning the lens every 3 days, either, not that I've ever raised it again. The compelling proof, however, is that I've been cleaning the lens every 3 days (often every 4 or 5 days actually!) for 20 years. Is that a long enough test? Am I super-resistant against infection, or what? I doubt it.

The proof of stretching a 1-2 year soft lens to 5 years is that it worked. It is illogical to think that it would increase the risk of infection. That's nothing to do with it. What could happen is that the lens gets covered in scratches or the plastic alters nature. But none of those things happened to me. I went to my optician (and other opticians overseas, actually, from time to time) wearing lens which happened to be 3 or 5 years old. No optician ever expressed concern, surprise or anything, after looking at my eyes and lens with their microscope thing.

I have had contacts for around 5 years now, been overcharged by boots for way too long!!!

    I would like to order:

    1) 1 pair of coloured monthly contacts (just to see if they suit me)
    2) Around 3-5 Pairs of monthly contacts.

I have soft contact lenses at the moment.. would it make a big difference if I just ordered a regular pair of contacts?

On my contact lenses box, the values are (for both eyes)

    Power: -2.00
    BC- 8.7 (median)
    Dia 14.4

would I need to know anything else before I can order online??

contactlenses.co.uk have the colour ones in for £16 is this value for money? I pay £20 a month for the normal lenses at the moment...

Do you mean soft contact lens designed to last 1 or 2 years?

This is all you need in order to order lens over the Internet but have you had you eyes checked recently, for general health and the correct power (that's the -2.00 element, which might have changed)? The base curve (BC) reading reflects the curvature of your eye, but might vary from one brand of lens to another. The diameter is just the way the lens is designed and can also have an impact on the BC reading. That's my understanding, anyway, as a lay person.

Asda opticians do 6 pairs of soft monthly lens for £33 I believe, plus £15 for a check-up and fitting. I suggest that is much better and safer than ordering over the Internet, at least in the first instance.

I just got 3 months worth of Acuvue dailies posted to me by the Camden Contact Lens Centre for £89. (inc postage).

This is better than most of the discounters mentioned.

I did get my eyes tested there previously, but I think they would accept prescriptions from elsewhere.

Furthermore, if you live in London, you have the advantage that you can go for a free checkup 6 months after your original fitting. So as the checkup lasts for a year, you can get a year and a half out of your one test fee.

They have excellent service, e.g. same day appointments often available. So you can get a discounted service for a full service price!

    They are on 020 7383 3838

I have no affiliation other than being a satisfied customer.
