  • Having always worn glasses I have often considered contacts but the price always puts me off. My last glasses after discounts were taken off were only £12 from Specsavers including anti-scratch lenses. I know contacts are more expensive but what is the best way for me to try them without forking out a fortune?

Hi Many places offer FREE trials of contact lenses, Specsavers, Boots, D & A etc. Just pop in/phone one and make an appointment.

But they normally insist you pay for a contact lens eye check first at about £25. A recent general eye test doesn't count. Asda Opticians are a good choice, found at some Asda stores. They charge a bit less for the test and give it back if you buy lens after the free trial. Their lens prices are very reasonable, too.

ljonski - I had a similar problem with Specsavers - they wouldn't give my prescription to Tesco when they asked for it on my behalf. Tesco told me to take it up with Specsavers . I didn't need to because when my local village optician phoned me to ask why I didn't get my lenses from him any longer (I explained he charged £30 a month and Specsavers £22) he told me he would price match Tescos prices! Much more convenient for me and I think it's good to use local shops (when the price allows for it!)

heard about the news that D&A is trying to withdraw from the Tesco clubcard scheme.

George_Bray: you can often get some free test vouchers from various mags or even pay a quid on ebay for them. If you happen to live in the midlands then here is a place that you can get a pintable voucher for scrivens: http://www.eyeshaveit.co.uk/voucher/voucher.pdf

Thanks for the suggestion but, as I mentioned, there's a difference between a general sight test (e.g. for glasses) and a contact lens sight test. The voucher you point to is for the former. Has anyone ever seen free offers or vouchers for a contact lens test / check up?

  • I had a leaflet from specsavers for a free trial of lenses.

They tried to make me pay a fitting fee and i said the leaflet said it was free and did not mention a fitting fee.

So they agreed to do it free.

They even had my records from a previous free trial.
Just said I hadn't worn lenses for 6 months and I had no problem.
  • With there being reports of all contact lenses being similar and that we are being ripped off by the manufacturers ( maybe marketing companies is moe appropriate) then how long can we use them for. Therefore can anybody tell me (or have I missed some posts as it can be difficult to navigate this site) how long can:-

    daily lenses be worn:

    weekly lenses be worn:

    bi-monthly lenses be worn:

    monthly lenses be worn:

I hope somebody can help me with this. Thanks.

Also can "ordinary" lenses be worn as an extended wear lens.
