Windows own "MovieMaker" software is as good as any budget editing packages and is free for xp users (service pack 2 required I believe). As far as DV in is concerned, I can't understand the attraction in this, I want my movies on dvd I can watch on any player or send to family and freinds not back on the camcorder tape. Just my opinion/preference.

One of the advantages of DV in is that once you have edited say 5 or 6 mini DV tapes down to 2 or 3 discs worth you can upload the finished production back onto tape without having to keep tapes with sections of useless footage....easier to archive as well.
That said I agree that the majority of users will not want to do this.

I take the points made about keeping the original on tapfor 2 reasons, first it's always good (some may say vital) to have a back up of any important data especially pictures, but also I also have some reservations about the long term life of writable cd's and dvd's I know I've lost some over the years. One other question, does it take as long to transfer the movies back to tape as it does to "render" one onto dvd?

Thanks for all the useful advice about camcorders, I have taken the plunge and bought a Canon MV960 from the Canon outlet as recommended. Before it arrives, I want to get an SD card, plenty of tapes and a firewire 4-4 cable. Are there any special deals on at the moment please? Are there any particular brands which anyone favours or hates? Thanks again.

Bargaincrazy have a few digital camcorders in their What's new section. I don't know much about camcorders I have to admit, but two of them seem to be pretty good value as far as I can see:

The Panasonic Mini DV NVGS35B is £147.99, and is supposed to retail at £330: that seems to be confirmed by Argos, who have it at £30 off at £299.99. It has a huge 30x optical zoom but otherwise seems to be a pretty average camcorder in its class - but then £180 off takes into a totally different price bracket and it might be a bargain. It's certainly about as cheap as you can find a Mini DV camcorder in any case. [Edit - showing as sold out as of 4:30pm 13/7/2006, sorry]

The other one that looks worth the money to me is the Sony DCRDVD403E DVD camcorder at £417.99. It seems to be selling at upwards of £600 everywhere else (£709.99 at play.com, though it's no longer available there), and much more in some places.

Maybe someone who knows more than me can comment on whether these two are worthy of being on the Grabbit board. Also, I've never ordered from Bargaincrazy, so I don't know if their service is good or bad, which is probably an important factor in buying equipment like this.

Note that there's also a free delivery code for Bargaincrazy on the codes 'n vouchers board, valid until Sunday 16th July.

Hope this is useful to someone...

I wouldnt buy another panny camcorder, unlike their other products - very unreliable......barely used mine...probably 15 60 min tapes worth and the transport has been repaired one and still doesnt work that well......bought it 5.5 years ago for £700 from John Lews - priced matched with the lowest net price [wont get that now!!](was 1250 rrp!! as it was one of the first mini dv type camcorders - how prices have tumbled)

  • @pepperoni if you still have the cam and its not to your needs, I will take it off your hands for what you paid.

I bought the tapes from ebay on Fri (21st) and they only arrived yesterday. Really pleased with the Camcorder - just what we needed, so thanks again to OP.
