Tomato I find that menu planning is a HUGE money saver for me. I started off by listing what I already had in the freezer & cupboards that I could make a main meal out. Things like minced beef, whole chicken, chicken pieces, sausages, pulses, beans, etc etc. Then I planned a meal out of each thing and wrote on my shopping list what I needed to make the complete meal - tinned tomatoes and maybe long spaghetti for bolognaise for example. Then I wrote down things on the shopping list that I'd need anyway like cleaning stuff, toiletries, things I'd ran out of or was running low on like cocoa, flour, sugar, coffee, tea bags, cat/dog food, milk, yoghurts, fruit etc.

When I went shopping I had a list of things that we needed to make meals with and I knew that anything else I bought was likely to be an impulse purchase as it definitely wasn't needed for the meals :)

It has also helped to stop me repeating things so much as I no longer buy the same things each week out of habit. I can also plan to do simple, easy to cook meals on busy days and slightly more complicated things on quiet days.

Hope that this helps to explain things a bit. I'd really give it a go if you want to I was surprised at how much money I saved and at how little food was thrown away as I'd used it all in planned meals :money:

Hi SunnyGirl :) I have just been blitzing cooked butter beans, black eye beans (cos they are what I have in the cupboard but kidney beans would work very well in keeping with the theme ;) ) and red lentils together (just cooked them all in the same pot). Last week I added some dill, white pepper, lemon juice and extra virgin olive oil to taste. You could really play with the flavours though; chilli/paprika and dill/cumin and chilli powder would all work well I think.
Thanks for that Boodle :T I've been fancying a change from lentil pate or hoummus and this would make a lovely change. I like the idea of chilli & paprika it sounds lovely :)

    Hi all

I know i am really late getting sorted this week. I was away all weekend and the time just got away. So if its OK with everyone I will start from today.

Tues Pancakes with lemon and sugar
Wed Mushroom stir fry with chinese sauce
Thurs Quorn lasagne and garlic bread
Fri Pork steak, noodles and coconut curry sauce
    Sat Egg, bacon and beans
Sun Chicken, roasties, peas and gravy

I really must be more organised because I have bought bits and bobs everyday to top up what I already have but this means no NSDs so I have made sure I have everything I need now for at least a couple of days.

    Have a good week everyone
