old landlord wont give us our post what do we do

Hello,

We moved out of a property we rented on 29/01 due to problems with our landlord and problems with the house that he would not resolve so we agreed to end the tennancy early and we left on the 29th jan. i have contacted the letting agents and advised us we have got a few things being delviered there and also our normal post being delivered that we would like back . this was last wednesday and the letting agents and they advised that the landlord advised them we had had no post. we thought that was a bit strange but left it. so we emailed them again this monday and he is still saying we have no post. we have never gone a week with out a single letter even if it is junk we have always had about 1 or 2 letters a day. also we where getting 3 things delivered to that address.

i know that he is deliberatly not giving it too us does any one know what we would need to do about this? we have done a mail redirect but that does not start until the 12th feb

please help

Write him a polite letter reminding him that it is a criminal offence to interfere with the delivery of somebody else's mail.
For every complex problem there is an answer that is clear, simple and wrong.

He is quite within his rights to just put "gone away" on the items and put them is a post box.
Why not get a Royal Mail redirect?

You can only get the redirect whilst you're at the property.

But with one about to start the OP needs to contact the landlord in writing requesting their mail.

Get addresses changed on everything you have to ASAP when you move.

royal mail needs a utility bill from the old address and some photo ID in order to set up mail redirect - they are not to know you have recently molved out.... its about £40 for a year... if you want your mail.. its the only way to do it

They are not to know thats correct. But the terms and conditions say you must still be living there when you request the setup. I'm sure you aren't trying to encourage someone to break a contractual obligation are you ???

BTW - They have got a redirect - it just isn;t active yet as RM take a while

You have no legal right to the mail, it has been delivered to the correct address, so long as the Landlord does not open it he has committed no offence.

If I was the Landlord I would return all mail to the sender marked 'not known' as this is the only way to remove the link between you and his address unless you do it with the supplier

RM dont care if you are about to move, or have moved, as long as they get income... their T&Cs re mail redirect say it can only be done for 12 months max.. 11 months in they bombard you with requests to take out another 12 months contract... so pls dont accuse me of trying to "break a contractual obligation ""

They send a confirmation to the address you're redirecting from though - and you have to send this back?

I thought that was how it worked but it is many years since I have set one up.
