The only "special" clothing I bought were a few nursing bras. They're not essential, but it is easier just to unclip one side rather than having to take the whole strap off. I also used the plastic breastshells, and home-made breastpads with a disposable pad inside (because the disposable ones have a waterproof layer whereas my towelling ones didn't).

Without pumping I'd get 8-12oz while doing the morning feed... these would be as useless as the shells... I think a lot of people 'leak' more than the capacity of these things and do not appreciate quite how much leakage there can be.

For the night time, cut a nappy in half (so you have a back piece and a front piece) and use as really absorbent breast pads.
wouldn't the gel go everywhere though?
What's with the cabbage leaves? I didn't manage to breastfeed last time (only lasted a week) so I don't really understand. Also how did you ladies stop your boobs being so hard in the mornings?
stop the hard boobies? its the best bit when you get your free boob job :rotfl:
I didn't use cabbage leaves, just tried to get Ed to feed to relieve the pressure or pump a bit off or have a nice warm shower/bath and a river of white would flow.

you can take ibuprofen to ease discomfort and swelling provided mum n baby have no health issues (a small amount passes into the milk which the nhs info says is fine in full term babies)
The very best is sometimes what nature gives us for free.

  • i used st's for breast pads, as they were alot cheaper than proper breast pads! also the stick back made sure they stayed in place!

At the first sign of mastitis, get to a doctor, don't wait till your sure cos by then you will feel hellish.

Just buy a decent pump the first time around rather than going through 5.

Try breast pads before you stock up on one particular brand - boots own gave me a rash.

Make sure your bra fits, if it's too tight it can lead to blocked ducts.

Get a good comfy pillow to help your back, nowt worse than a 2 hour feed when you are sitting slumped over, means the baby won't feed right either.

Oh and breast fed babies need winded too, nobody told me that!
