AVG... Help needed

Hi..

I ran a full scan on my laptop not long ago (using AVG) & usually nothing comes up as infected, but today it did... Trojan came up and i removed the file, I have noticed my pc is slow.. Also a while ago i came onto the forum for some help with my anti virus etc. And since trying to update that ad-aware, as i was told to do. My Windows Defender is always switched offwhen i start my computer, so i have to turn it on everytime i log on. I didn't have that problem before. Even though i updated my ad-aware it still says every day there is a new version

Hope someone can help. Thanks in advance :D

You could try a different anti-virus program. I personally like Microsoft Security Essentials (this updates Windows Defender to check for viruses as well, so you only need to use one program). However, when you know that you have had a virus/spyware, it may be a good to try a scan with a different program like Hitman Pro: http://www.surfright.nl/en/hitmanpro
Alternatively, you could run a scan with one of the online scanners mentioned in the sticky post on this forum.

When you say that Windows Defender is switched off, do you mean that the service is not running or just that you don't get an icon for it in the tray?

In general, don't leave more than one anti-virus program installed though.

It says the service isn't running and i have no protection and i have to turn it on, but it never used to be like that until i updated that ad-aware :(

    I have:
    AVG Anti-Virus
    Ad-Aware
    Windows Firewall

Is that all i need to protect my computer.. Sorry I sound pretty thick! :o

Id rather get rid of the ad-aware though, as it doesn't seem to do anything.. everytime i run it, i always get the same 3 problems on it daily even though i deleted them many many times! :(

Should i download "Microsoft Security Essentials" and get rid of ad-aware and keep the avg anti-virus??

Thankyou for your reply, I really appreciate your help :D

It is generally not a good idea to have two of the same type of program. They may interfere with each and they will definitely slow your computer down!

You really need Windows Firewall, but I suggest definitely getting rid of Ad-Aware (as it only duplicates the work of Windows Defender). If you install Microsoft Security Essentials, then you won't need AVG either.

HitmanPro doesn't constantly scan for viruses like most anti-virus programs, but it will instead perform a thorough search when you tell it to, so it would be a good idea to run it now to ensure that the virus is completely gone.

Ok Thankyou. I just realised I mentioned keeping the same type of program :o

Do you just use Microsoft Security Essentials? And that covers everything?

HitmanPro .. Is that an online scanner or do I need to download it? ..

    Thanks Again :)

    Hi shoptillyoudrop

First thing is take a deep breath and don't panic!

When you say...........everytime i run it, i always get the same 3 problems on it daily even though i deleted them many many time.........what are the problems?

If your computer is slowing down and problems are starting to appear then it may be a idea to run a scan with Malwarebytes just to check.

You can download it from here......

    http://www.filehippo.com/download_malwarebytes_anti_malware/

Make sure you download the latest version, there is a green tab which says "Download latest version" top right of the link.

When you have downloaded, open malwarebytes and update it first and then run a full scan.

When the full scan has finished copy & paste the log file here.

  • Yes, I just use Microsoft Security Essentials (and the Windows Firewall) and that does everything.

HitmanPro can be dowloaded to your computer, but it is sort of an online scanner as well - if it suspects that any files contain viruses, it will upload them so that they can be checked by multiple virus scanners; this should theoretically be more reliable than any regular virus scanner on your computer. The free version of HitmanPro is a 30 day trial, but the 30 days only start after it actually fixes something, so you don't need to pay to scan your computer with it.

You wouldn't recommend doing what tentonine said?
Maybe I Do need to take a deep breath. I get confused & don't know which advice is best. I need something simple but effective! :D
I will Run both scanners that you both have recommended :) .. When the ad-aware finishes scanning i will post the three problems as i know they will be there again :rotfl:
Would it be easier (simple) for me to just have 'Microsoft Security Essentials' with my firewall and windows defender. Would you recommend running the online scanners aswel?

    Thanks For Your Help :D

  • If it is Windows XP, almost certainly 32-bit. If it is Vista or Windows 7, right-click on "Computer" on the start menu and then choose properties. It will say 32-bit or 64-bit under "System type".

Not at all I would recommend what tentonine say, its good advice.
I would try and find out why you are having problems first before changing anything, no harm trying malwarebytes first just to double check that you don't have anything nasty.
