You must be wishing that you never put this on the forum. The amount of negative comments from individuals is laughable.

When I used to work at a garage I quite often had to phone people to obtain authorisation to carry out extra work, be it whilst servicing or MOT. I made sure that price was never exceeded without additional authority. For the garage to give you a ball park figure of between £300-£400 is not acceptable. What you need to get is a full breakdown of Parts, Labour & VAT + the MOT price. Dont forget that with the work involved there would have been consumables like grease etc that has not been quoted but added after. Once you have seen the price breakdown negotiate the price down to somewhere inbetween what has been quoted and what is expected. After all they can probably discount the parts slightly and even the labour cost. Make sure that the items that have been replaced are new (unless they stated they were'nt) as you will get warranty of 12 months.

At the end of the day its up to you what you do, negotiate, pay and accept, or not pay and risk the garage keeping your car until you do pay.

Tell me something else; what is the point of getting an estimate if you can then be charged whatever they want to charge you?

If my builder had asked for £18K for the work done, instead of the estimated £12K, do I just pay him?

I think that you need to learn the difference between a " quote " and an " estimate "

    A builder would give a " quote " ( quotation ), the garage gave an " estimate".

Clueless Jock I don't know where you live but where I live we have to live, work and do business with local people. In the most part we have to trust each other that someone is not rpping us off.

That might appear slightly naive to you. But in this example I would probably chat to the garage and say "look this is a bit higher than I was expecting can you please contact me in the future if you are going to go over". I'm sure you are absolutely correct and OP can fight this if they wish. If they don't pay then garage will hold onto the car until it is paid, then it all gets very messy.

The main problem nowdays is if everyone takes your sort of combatitive approach then where will we be.

superclan, thanks for some sensible comments. I think milliemonster has gone off to buy another car, otherwise I wouldn't hijack her serious thread in such a manner. I am just having some fun with the children. It is educational play you understand, although it seems they are all at that awkward age of not being able to be told anything!

I wouldn't get an approx price in first place so there is no chance of being stuffed.

Actually, if you think approximate means anywhere from 142.5% & 190% of a price then you are very much clueless.

No, the main problem today is that people, as demonstrated here, are so willing to just pay anything that they are shafted at every turn. To suggest a bill should only be questioned if it reaches twice the estimate demonstrates a serious lack of understanding. This attitude in turn encourages the inflation of estimates.

You lot really have missed what this site is all about!

    Oh, oh the hurt!

Not much else to add then?

How does me asking you a simple question make me clueless, does your response not actually make you the clueless one?
