and don't forget, lots of garages quote exclusive of vat. So the original quote was actually a total cost of £470.

I have never understood why garages do this. I'm pretty sure my beat up old fiesta doesn't look like a works/company van. ?

Considering you don't know the full story and you comment as below
£600 to put a freelander through an MOT isn't too bad considering its age.

the answer to your question, is you are!

Unfortunately I have to agree with CluelessJock, an estimate regardless of the company it originates from or what type of work being carried out should be reasonably accurate,

    Just pay and move on.

Work £170 more than you thought. If you had took it back with no MOT and tried to sell it on you would have lost even more.

If bills like this are too high then you shouldn't have a 2nd car as you can't afford it.

Eh I really dont see what the problem is.

£570 to get a 10 year old 4x4 through its MOT? Seems reasonable really.

An estimate of £300-400 on a repairing a car that ends up costing £570 is pretty accurate in my opinion!

Its not like getting a quote for a set of new curtains.

Garages often have to do a lot of donkey work, sourcing parts from scrappys and trying different parts to solve problems.

Ive had some right bangers over the years that have driven my local garage up the wall.
  • 42.5% over the top estimate (90% over the lower estimate) is accurate? Some opinion!

Hmm, the above comments explain very clearly why the below is the case

and is likely to be for some time, I suspect!

As I expect will be the case for eschaton

Eh? Why is it unfortunate? Nothing unfortunate about not allowing yourself to be shafted by a garage! But then when you have attitudes like kriss_boy & eschaton you can't really blame the garage. Like taking sweeties from children springs to mind.

exactly, and £300 - £400 is hardly a quote, it sounds more like an estimate to me.

with older cars you can think one thing is broken, take it off and break 2 other parts in the process, take these off and another breaks. its unfortunatly what happens.
