Yesterday, on the advice of a Virgin engineer on the phone helpline, we took our connection off the Netgear firewall we are using and put it straight on to our BB connection......the speed went up to 10MB without the firewall!! So, assuming the firewall was obviously slowing down our speeds considerably, we got a new one and put it on last night. Result is we now have 10MB speed during the day and in the evening.
So anyone having speed problems, it may well be worth checking your firewall as ours seemed to be functioning well otherwise and we had no clue it was causing this. My son games all night every night and has no problems with Virgin BB
The speed today is even worse!!0 -
We also have a netgear wireless router. How do you turn the firewall off?

Hi Annie, The Netgear we had on yesterday is the FVS318 and the one we put on last night is the FVS338. I didn't bother trying to turn it off so not sure about that and can't look at the moment as it's unaccessible to me. Just find the wire that comes from your laptop or PC and goes into the Netgear, then take it out of the Netgear and put it directly into your modem. Warning.... obviously this leaves your computer unprotected while you test your new speed so be aware of this ok. As I said, it seemed to be functioning normally and there was no indication that there was anything wrong with it, so it's definately worth trying your pc without to see what happens. I'm delighted and can't believe how fast my PC is now!
Hope this helps0 -

I doubt it would be anything to do with the hardware firewall within the router as you are getting full speed at some times and not at others.Gemsgalore wrote: »Just find the wire that comes from your laptop or PC and goes into the Netgear, then take it out of the Netgear and put it directly into your modem.
I doubt Annie would be able to do that. On ADSL the modem and router are combined unlike cable BB which has a separate modem and router.0 -

Thanks, I was getting even more confused!
I think the answer seems to be to switch ISP to be, as they prioritise traffic.0
