Which baby milk?

Hi,
I have a very hungry 17 day old baby boy, and have been breastfeeding him. It's getting a bit much, and have been advised to top up, and we started with sma gold.
he now throws this back up, and have tried sma white, which nearly always results in a vomiting session too!
there are other brands, but am not sure which one would be good, and don't want to keep buyig diferent ones as they get expensive.

Is there a brand you'd recommend?
Thank you

Who advised you to 'top up'?

Is it possible for you to put some time and effort into breastfeeding or are you decided that you want to feed formula milk?

(sorry jay jay i know you love the breastfeeding and i'm not gonna argue with my carrs pasty mate!!) but Minx i used Farleys First(yellow tin: buy it cheaper over counter at clinic even if you dont get help with it as it is cheaper than supermarket there) and never had any smelly vomit with both my girls so try it if you wish i recommend it, all the best with the baby!
ps, i dont know about top up though i only ever fully formula fed

I think it's just trial and error with some babies. Only the SMA suited my eldest, having tried milupa and c & g before that. Don't know anything about topping up with breast-feeding though.

    I recommend breastmilk ;)

do you really want to formula feed? it's just that 17 days is classic growth spurt time - if he's feeding all the time, that's totally normal :)

    have a look here...

especailly the bit that says 'It is not necessary (or advised) to supplement your baby with formula or expressed milk during a growth spurt '

breastfeeding will get easier if you stick at it (if that's what you want) :)

is it actually vomit? or is he just bringing back up little bits because he has had too much?

If its just the little bits its perfectly normal! If it is vomit then it may be trial and error to find a milk that suits him. As across did i used farleys first with both of my 2 until i found they were lactose intolerant and they ended up on soya milk  Although i did have to breastfeed both of my 2 in the time waiting for the prescription of the soya milk from the gp

I do agree with Jay-Jay though if you are fully breastfeeding i wouldnt have thought at 17 days old he would need a top up

Oh hugs to you :o and congratulations :T

It's all so tough in the early days. Good luck with the feeding. Is he bringing it up with his wind? Or sicking it up later?

If you're finding it expensive, just buy a couple of the cartons (I never used Farley's but I assume they use the cartons as other brands do?....if this is the one you are going to try). I was told that Milupa is good for sensitive babies, but that could have just been twaddle?

I "topped up" with my second baby all the way through and because of it I kept breastfeeding for six months, I'm sure I would have given up before then if I hadn't done it (just to get some sleep lol). It's different for all mothers and different with each baby that you have. Just trust yourself and do what makes you happy.

    Take care.

I don't want to go across the grain or start a debate on the right way to feed a baby BUT....

As a student midwife I was trained to keep ( and I hate to use the word but) 'pushing' the fact that 'breat is best'. (I'm not debating the fact it is) We were not to encourage 'top up feed's' and just to persevere with the breast feeding. I never really saw anything wrong with this and basically did as I was told.

Becoming a mother last June, everything changed. I intended to breastfeed my daughter for at least 6 months. As it was, she didn't take to breast feeding. It was not a case of 'trying harder'. I had support from everyone, so it wasn't as if I was by myself.
I spent 3 weeks literally in tears over the fact that Tabitha would be on the breast all day every day. Her weight gain was excellent but it was physically draining me. I was unable to express because there was just not much there.
It got to a point where I was dreading my own daughter waking up. Everyone was trying to encourage me to 'just try another day' and 'it will get easier'.

Eventually, against my HV wishes, i started topping up with SMA Gold. For the first time in nearly a month, Tabitha would actually lay on the floor content with a full belly. I was happier, sleeping better and able to 'bond' with my daughter easier.
Seeing this from both a professional and personal experience I can get perspective.

I'm sorry for overtaking this thread but the OP only asked for information about formula milk, not to be told to try harder by putting more time and effort (no offence meant to anyone)
