I envy the people with short haired dogs - wipe them down and... wohooooooo ;)

Zara stinks 6 days out of 7 - can not keep her away from water when she sees some (read every day) and with her double coat (and longish too) it takes her ages to dry so by the time sheis almost dry - she is swimming again...

You know that smell of washing left in washing machine for too long? Yup, that is my dog.

But - she is happy and I would never stop her swimming or runnign through mud (we brush this out when it dries on her LOL).

She goes to grommers every 3-4 months for a bath, good brush that gets rid of all the dead hair that I can not brush out at home, nail clipping (she runs in woods/fieds normally so nails need clipping sometimes) ears cleaned.

Used the be every other day but now we're down to one a week and thats only if his skin is looking really bad. I'll probably give him one a bit later actually, his legs are looking quite red. His last one was on Wednesday.

The vet has told us to use baby shampoo on him if we ever run out of his normal shampoo, obviously not all the time but once or twice isn't going to cause a huge problem. Mine was fine after it.

I don't recommend anyone bathing their dogs as much as mine is though, there's no need for it and takes too much time!

So many replies...thanks for all the advice! When he does have a bath I use puppy shampoo and it smells just like baby shampoo! Lasts a few days then its back to old goat. Luckily he doesnt mind having baths and loves being groomed . I am going to have a look into some of the wipe/ dry foam options for the inbetween times . He goes to the vets regularly btw and is a very healthy, just stinky, 8 yr old .
    Thanks everyone.

I quite like the smell of Jasper (not the botty-smells though) - it's all comforting and biscuity. Saves money on the heating when he snuggles up as well!

We used to bath our rottie quite often when he was a pup as he had a bad habit of backing himself into a corner and then walking all in his poo lol... he's 7 months old now and due for another bath soon as he's got a bit smelly... we probably wash him every couple of months now, with puppy shampoo.

    Depends on the dog.

One of ours sleeps on our bed, and is less than fragrant, she also has to have a skin treatment every now and then, so luckily, everything works out, she has showers every two weeks-monthly. as a grey hound she is very short coated, and between times is wiped ith a damp flannel, and she dries quickly. One of the others loves showers, but also naturally smells good. She has longer hair and a double coat. She gets a bath/shower twice, maybe four times a year, she'd love to be bathed weekly, or more :). Her sister doesn't particularly like bathing, and is bathed 2-4 times a year too. Neither of those two roll a lot, not smell bad, or have skin or coat conditions. They get hosed or warm rinsed if they have got very muddy, otherwise I brush it off when its dry.

We have doggy perfume, its applied once a week or when we have guests coming to help combat the dogs smells of a house. I agree, dogs over groomed is a shame, but I also like living in a nice environment, so for me its trying to walk a balance between whats right for them, whats pleasant for us.

Ahhh, I'd love to bath my two, the bath, however would not be so impressed.
It's usually a wipe down with baby wipes if they are wet and muddy, or leave them outside til the mud has dried off slightly. In the winter we have feet up and washed in warm water in the utility room sink whilst standing on a towel with the back feet.
We do use the hose in the summer on feet and muddy bellies, but mostly a rub over with a knobbly glove does all we need.

We have one who is a swimmer, but she only does this at the country park, so she has plenty of time in the back of the Navara on the way home to dry off, and the Navara just hoses out :-)

Because of the size? We always have installed a double sized (or a bit larger) shower, the perfect size for one giant and one or two people. Makes everything much easier. The only thing then is getting dog dry and warn then having to nip back for a warmer shower yourself :o

I only bathe George, our Springer, every couple of weeks. But if he has got dirty whilst out in the woods or going in the muddy streams, then he gets a hose down, followed by a towelling. He hates it, but thats the price of getting filthy!!!
