Ours get showered when they need it. IE, dirt in fur or they smell bad. (not the normal "doggy smell")

I wipe mine down with dogggy wipes, but he often smells of pee and has dirty dried bits on face, I do use a wet flannel daily on him but the pee smell thing means i have to bath him monthly, only use his doggy shampoo every few months xxxxx

That pee smell can really be overpowering espec when he has had a good lick and slurp down below and it smells on his fluffy face, then he wants a kiss?!??! xxxxx

I have a greyhound and she hates getting bathed, i bought a foaming waterless shampoo from poundland, basically you brush dog massage foam in and towel dry. A lot less stressful for her (and me), she actually enjoys it as she gets a brush and rub lol

when she needs it! ie after rolling in poo or coming home covered in a ridiculous amount of mud. her hair is medium length so it isnt too bad- most other dogs get it far, far worse than her.

however, we have a silly flyball habit, so most often than not, she gets bathed after practice because it a. always rains during practice, and b. the field we used is also used by horses - so we have not just mud, but poo rolling/eating to contend with as well! :D
  • Never! but luckily my dog isn't a stinker and short haired too so requires little maintenance.
Maybe a little doggy when she's damp - but we just towel her off, thats the closest she ever gets to a wash, and we've trained her not to roll in siht.
I know some dogs reek..my brother's cocker spaniel stinks, you're hands stink after touching him, and he gets lots of baths.

    Hi,

You have to be careful about bathing dogs. Stinky though they may be (I have a staffie - sometimes I call him "The Devil's Air Freshener"...), if you over-bathe a dog, especially with human-shampoo, it can strip the dog's coat of the oils it needs to keep it waterproof and can cause irritating dryness and flaking of the skin.

Might be worth getting the dog checked by a vet - just to make sure the smell isn't related to a skin infection. However, if you REALLY have to bath the mutt, I recommend using a very mild baby shampoo, like Johnson's 'No More Tears' formula in a very small quantity.

    Hope this helps.

    Good luck. xx

I agree - over bathing is bad for the skin - however, the PH of baby shampoo is wrong for dogs, even though its very gentle on human babies.

Baby shampoo has a ph of about 5.5, i.e. slightly acidic, like human skin, whereas a dogs skin ph is more like 7.5, which is why a good, gentle dog shampoo is far better for doggy skin!

I never bath my weimaraner, the mud just wipes off him, if he rolls in anything, it gets wiped with a babywipe, hes very low maintainance :rotfl:my american cocker gets a bath every 6 weeks when she goes to be groomed. She gets brushed every other day to keep the tangles out and remove any mud or twigs shes gathered along the way and thats about it.
I dont mind the smell of dogs, as long as they havent been rolling in anything nasty :rotfl:

  • I have to bath my dog once every two weeks as she really smells. She has a horrible habit of weeing in her bed, and even though it gets changed at least twice a week the smell is terrible.

I wonder if it's because she didn't have a bed where she lived before. Also she was surrounded by lots of other dogs and I'm not sure if she was properly house trained. She is getting better and loves to go outside now but the bed thing is almost as if she's marking her territory.
