pc world Whateverhappens

Hi just a warning to other users here is my letter /email to company

[FONT=times new roman, new york, times, serif]
here is a copy of letter sent to DSG retail
I am extremely unhappy at the way I was sold the above policy. I cannot emphasise enough that I refused any kind of insurance at point of purchase.
I consider the letter to explain the detail below and can only say that I have already written to Watchdog and Money saving forum. I have had to trawl the Internet to
find your address to email/ write to as I was given no paperwork other than my receipt.( as I had already refused this insurance.). This is why i consider it to be so underhand.
Im sure you will feel that Im just a small fish a big pond. But I was just about to buy my son a new laptop from pc world, as I had been very happy with my laptop.
But now I feel my trust has been shattered in your company and feel it is my duty to warn as many people as I can about this practice,
whether you believe me is up to you. But for a cost of £8.49 you have lost a much larger purchase.

Dear Sir or Madam
Ref xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
I request that you cancel my “whatever happens” policy with immediate effect. I consider the way this product is sold to be completely underhand. To be sold a PC at say £ 400 then have a managers discount applied of – 8.49 and then added again as payment for “whatever happens”, is in my opinion done, so the customer will not notice as the end price you pay is still £400 This is nothing short of outrageous especially as I had refused any insurance and made that clear at the time of purchase..
I now withhold any agreement for you to charge my credit card with anymore payments and would view you doing so as fraud. A copy of this letter has been forwarded to my credit card company. I also have written to watchdog as far too many people have suffered from this to be a coincidence.

Not quite sure I understand this... the laptop was £400 originally right? Then they added the 'whatever happens' insurance, but discounted the cost of that insurance? So basically you're getting the insurance for no extra cost? In which case, what is the problem?

Sorry if I misunderstand your point, but if I am then you might want to make your letter a bit more clear

looks more like its a monthly payment
however they discounted the original price so its still cost £400 at point of sale

They can't take monthly credit card payments for whatever happens (or direct debit payments) without you specifically signing the mandate.

So why didn't you question why you were signing such a mandate?

If they didn't get you to sign the mandate that is fraud, however, it used to be the case that it was impossible for head office to set it up without one.

I promise you I havent signed anything but on my reciept it says amount due xxxx
under that credit card mandate 8.49.
so i gess that is all they need I just feel it was very well hidden im just grateful that the
"whateverhappens" is PAYG and so at most Ive lost just 8.49.
I was given a whole load of paperwork, but nothing was said about insurance as we had already said no. My error was not checking how they came to the total amount just looking at the final amount to pay . Eg I expect to pay £400 bill is £400 I pay happy that it correct not noticing i been give a 8.49 discount then chrged 8.49 for Whatever happens
PC world add a lot of things like anti virus to your reciept etc if you ask to have it removed it shows on the reciept, as lets say Norton £45 then Norton -£45. this results in
a lot of + and - on reciept. So its easy to miss the adding of insurance, which is why i suspect they do it

  • Inform your bank/credit card about this theft. Make sure you have cancelled any DD/Standing Order created by these people.

They will sort out this matter.

Wait for reply from PC World, once you get apology letter leave them, if not ask for compensation.
