    even without the offer oxo stock cubes work out cheaper for 24 than asda own brand. It might be worth someone looking to see what the yield is from a tub of bouillon powder. Shirley might get more value from a tub of that than from a stock cube and she can choose how much or how little stock to add to something without wasting any.

    'Fraid that would be a step too far for me - with other things on my plate.

    Right now - this thread has rather prompted me in a very different direction anyways - ie of "bumping up" the "health angle" of what I eat even more. Hence - I've now swopped from organic wholemeal flour to stoneground organic wholemeal flour for instance and olive oil is always going to be extra virgin now.

    Think my budget these days would be stratospheric compared to Bob and Shirley's. My personal take is to use cheap recipes with best-quality ingredients IYSWIM. I'd need a bank loan if I was using dear recipes with best-quality ingredients:eek:.

    I'm personally working on sorta modern day "peasant" style recipes - with peasant quality ingredients (ie - as untampered with as those peasants have had for hundreds of years before Big Business came onto the scene and started processing food madly and throwing fat/soya/sugar/salt/unnecessary water into the mix to improve their profits at our expense).

    Having seen that mention in the post the other day about food manufacturers preventing cookbooks being published for several years in America unless Canola oil was put in as an ingredient every time oil was mentioned - I shall now be studying my cookbooks with a beady eye to see if I can spot any heavily-processed ingredient turning up regularly - and throwing any like that into the bin. I dont think I've got any of the 1970s cookbooks that regularly featured C*******s condensed soups...(part of the reason I had to turn to health food back then was because there was so much of that sort of malarkey going on in other recipes at that time - even in Britain).

    I've seen stuff that's treated in Sainsbury's but it's loads more expensive (like about five times the price IIRC) - it's called masa harina.

    Oooo, did anyone watch the Ration Book Britain programme on Yesterday last night? It was pretty good and apparently there's going to be something on at 5pm about wartime cooking?

    QOS, your breadsticks sound yummy, but I'm confused re: technique. You have your dough and then you do what? Roll it out flat and cut strips? Where does the filling come in? I've never made breadsticks! :o

    weezl, I'll slice the bread next time I bake (prolly tomorrowish or Thurs), as pre this month whenever I made that bread, we just sliced it as and when (which IS naughty as DH manages to take off massive hunks in 1 go!!).
