hi murrell, thanks for the vegetarian society response on the heating up the rapeseed oil debate. I wonder, did he give any articles or linkies or anything just to reassure us that it's ok for it to be heated without loss of omega 3?

    :A:D

    Morning Weezl,

No there was no links, sorry.

On a somewhat unrelated point - I've just stuck some sloe muffins in the oven (yep...THOSE sloes - ie the ones normally used for sloe gin...) - and if any of the more "expert" cooks on here have any tips for a better way than I just tried of getting the stones out of those sloes - 'twould be appreciated for the future please:)

    - as in I just squidged all those stones out with my fingers - whilst thinking "no wonder no-one ever uses sloes for actually eating..." - but this is one of my experiments in a different-ish direction to this thread.

So - if anyone else has ever actually tried cooking with sloes - advice welcome:) - the taste test is later today - when I try them out on friends...

.......and yep....I kept the eggshells to add into breadmaking flour...

orkney, as the oats will be quite 'thirsty' compared to the spuds, I'd be tempted to use all of the bean juice and to have handy sommat else for them to soak up if the mixture goes too dry?

bit of tomato juice from a can of chopped toms? Bit of stock cube dissolved in water, or marmite in hot water?

Really looking forward to your results, and thanks heaps for being willing to risk your ingredients for our project :)
Was just thinking about the oats being dry lol, might add a bit of water to my beetroot chutney puree (it is a strong chutney) and also a bit more bean juice too.

    OK,
I made the veggie burgers as per weezl's recipe except:
150g oats substituted for 150g tatties.
For seasoning I used the garlic (1/2 tsp puree), chilli (1 tsp paprika), pepper, salt, mustard (1/4 tsp powder). Instead of the cabbage chutney I used 1tbsp beetroot pickle and 1 tsp tom/chilli puree as I had these in already. Also added 4tbsp warm water.
    Got 8 smallish patties.
I liked them, DH said he could eat them but when asked what he would have with them he said a meat burger!. I would maybe consider not including the potato skins in it as they taste quite strong!
Even with 150g oats they definitely don't taste that oaty!
Am going to freeze the remaining ones after the trial taste!

ETA I did not need the flour for shaping either as they were a lovely shaping consistency!

Bread has turned out well rose a bit unevenly but that doesnt affect the taste. Will def make again maybe make some rolls next time or turn the bread into something flavoured maybe with sundried toms or if anyone has some tried and tested flavours would love to hear your suggestions

Not frugal at all but totally scrummy is this recipe for rolls with feta, sun dried toms and rosemary. I use oven dried toms from the Cranks book. My DD goes mad for them and OH loves them too. I don't use the flower pots, just shape them as rolls. The recipe says 8, but I find it makes 12 good sized rolls and they freeze very well

    hello :)

We've been to a boot sale, asda and costco, so I rushed back to see hoe orkney's burgers went!

Glad you liked them, shame DH didn't :( If he's up for answering any researchy type questions, I'd love to know:

    dear mr orkney star:

was it this particular type of burger you weren't fond of or are all veggie burgers a bit lacking something for you?

Is there anything we could have served this with (other than meat :rotfl:) which would have made it more of a winner? Home made lemon mayo, a spicy salsa/relish, a tangy apple chutney?

Do you think it's partly how we marketed the recipe that made it a bit less than you'd like, I mean if we had called it a spicy hash brown would it have had more appeal, whereas the word burger made you think of meat?

Many thanks for any further thoughts if you fancy giving them!

Of course he is welcome not to answer and you don't even have to ask him if you'd rather not Orkney star!!!

Frankie, are you doing the breast meat for the roast and the dark meat for the pie? I'll try it the other way round and then we'll see which one works out best for which meal IYSWIM? I've just slo-cookered (poached for creating lush gravy :)) my chicken so was going to have a think about the pudding soon.

I looked at the boot sale for a pudding basin for you frankie, but no sign :(

I made the pasta puttanesca last night. We added some chopped peppers and brocolli and swapped the anchovie for tuna. I know this means it isn't pasta puttanesca now but we enjoyed it. Actually it was my normal tuna pasta bake method but using your quantities from your recipe.

I only used one tin of tuna between me and six men. We still have some left and some have had it for lunch today.

Tonight will be the chilli mince again and tomorrow if I can get my hands on a chicken will be roast and chicken pie on Monday.

My family have asked for sausage plait for one day in the week. If I can get some sausagemeat I will try it out. It may be quite pricey unless I add some chopped vegetables to the sausage mixture.

I asked my DH about the veggie burgers and he says he doesn't want to try them. He would prefer my spicy lentil shepherds pie instead. So he is not anti-veggie food just wants his burgers to be meat.
So he doesn't get any at all as our budget doesn't allow for them:)

weezl Yes, I'm intending on taking off the legs and wings before I put the chicken out for the roast. Then I'll slow cooker the legs, wings and carcass and use the meat for the pie and stock for soup.
That's lovely that you looked for pudding basin, thank you

OrkneyStar I thought your burgers looked very yummy.

I'm going to try to do a spicy bean burger recipe next week. I'll let you know how it goes.

weezl The pasta bake with tomatoes and bacon...shall I give that a go too?
