I noticed on mysupermarket that kidney beans are cheaper than baked beans. Perhaps they would work as an alternative for the veggie burgers/bean burgers...what do you think weezl and OrkneyStar?

Dont know about anyone else - but I think kidney beans would be perfectly acceptable - and healthier than baked beans (no sugar:)).

The Rainbow Coalition in action - as I would put it.

I've sent a request through for access to the vegetarian stock checker spreadsheet purlease Weezl..

Actually....I'd be quite interested to have access granted to the others as well:)

    That's fine.
I just don't want to use ingredients that you either don't have or don't have enough of. So it's just helpful to know what's available to me. As for the pudding...that's a complete unknown for me! I'll find some kind of dish....!

Ah right: garlic, mustard, onion sweetcorn, cubes of potato, flour, milk, knob of butter are all available for chicken and sweetcorn pie filling (plus your left over chicken obviously :rotfl: ) will be a bit more accurate on amounts of stuff after consult with Lesley, but I'm guessing that's a sunday / monday baking job for you?

I'll try to be a bit clearer on quantities by tonight :)

weezl, just to say that will be testing the pasta "carbonara" (or whatever we're calling it) tonight as my DH needs to fuel up for his half-marathon tomorrow :D.

ALSO, I need to stop reading this thread right before bed, as I had this bizarro dream that I met you and Fergie walking down the street - except Fergie was about 5 years old with white blond hair! :D:p

are there any recipes still needing RecipeCal? I've totally lost track of what recipes are in "final stages" and therefore need doing.

Good thought - which hadnt occurred to me - computer-illiterate as I am:)

Not being p.c.-literate - so how would I know? - but is it possible for you/other people to take off a screenprint so to say - then any version couldnt be "lost" accidentally?

OrkneyStar There's a recipe on weezl's blog, which you can get to from her profile
    thanks, found it :)
So I will do as per written, except substitute 150g of the tatties with oats.
I will stick with baked beans because if I open the can DS can have beans on toast for his tea, but agree that kidney beans would be a suitable swapsy depending on price. I am working with dried kidney beans these days, or occasionally Tesco Value/lidl ones and they probably are cheaper than beans (I buy whatever is cheapest in shop- have a wee pile of Branstons ones!). Most beans work well in burgers, I guess it is just what is cheapest (bearing in mind our couple might not buy dried ones as someone said earlier!).
Also I have none of weezl's chutney but for flavour will add a tiny bit of blitzed beetroot chutney ?
Will try these for lunch :).

    interesting, thanks
hi murrell, thanks for the vegetarian society response on the heating up the rapeseed oil debate. I wonder, did he give any articles or linkies or anything just to reassure us that it's ok for it to be heated without loss of omega 3?

orkney, as the oats will be quite 'thirsty' compared to the spuds, I'd be tempted to use all of the bean juice and to have handy sommat else for them to soak up if the mixture goes too dry?

bit of tomato juice from a can of chopped toms? Bit of stock cube dissolved in water, or marmite in hot water?

Really looking forward to your results, and thanks heaps for being willing to risk your ingredients for our project :)

I've never cooked with dried peas before, so was thinking of buying some to try. Do they turn out like marrowfat peas or mushy peas? Is there a link to the pea puree also that needs trying, I will see if its something I can do. I may not be able to get the same brand as using a different supermarket, but I see the brand has changed anyway, so hoping it doesn't matter.

    Thanks
    Sandra
