I just don't feel we are educating people to fish and therefore feeding them for life in the area of living within their means.

I'd like to see Gordon Brown create more of a focus on the dangers of getting into debt, and ways out of it. Campaigns about smoking, using your mobile when you drive, how to cross a road safely, not drinking and driving, yes! Debt? Nope!

I'd like to see bread baking taught to every primary school child, followed by cakes, pastry etc. I'd like to see it branded as not just a girl's subject.

I'd like nutrition focussed on in a joined up thinking way rather than scatty, seperate campains that don't tie up to anything else like the 5 a day.

I'd like government to rule out payday loans companies, loan sharking, 'cash my gold' and put at least an upper cap of interest that credit cards and overdrafts can be offered at in the uk. 8% max would be my goal.

Instead of 'cash my gold' shunted between endless, 'I'm not a celebrity-I've just dated one' TV, let's let the BBC as a nationally owned broadcaster make programmes which tell people how to get out of debt.

Lets make them as lovely to watch as 'Kirstie's homemade home' and delias complete christmas, but with kirstie making the christmas decorations out of salt dough, not the £20 glass baubles, and lets get delia using frugal ingredients, on telly, with costings.

Let's not axe or cut benefits, but let's make sure that the healthy start vouchers can be used on dried and tinned Fruit and veg, rather than not that, but it can include chocolate milkshake

    I could go on....

But it's not the place :)

I'd love to have a long discussion to explore your beliefs with you. There are enough projects in just this post to last more than a lifetime.

I have many questions and comments bubbling, but as you said, it's not the place

Ah..thanks for that....in fact you've quite cheered me up at the thought that there are actually TWO things apparently that the Government says not one single word of advice about to people. I thought overpopulation was the only thing they should be giving advice to people about (a "Please Stop at Two" campaign) - but arent currently.

yep...agree that debt is the other issue the Government should be giving advice about to people.

ceridwen do you read the new internationalist? Last months was a special on overpopulation, and the way different governments have attempted to tackle it. I can scan and email it to you if getting hold of a copy would be hard :)
It seems advising/telling to stop at 2 has no effect on fertility rates.

But educating women (generally, nothing to do with family size) cuts down the
offspring rate from mean: 6 per woman to mean 1.9 per woman.

Lesley lets all have that debate at the Imperial War museum cafe! ;)

if you're not bored of nutrition calcs, I've been working on a possible Bob lasagne, but I think my portions are too big, and the calories etc would easily tell me! It's here if you felt able to at any point :)

yes, I remember reading about this many years ago. It seems incredible to me that educating the woman should make all the difference, rather than just people generally. One of the charities says, can't remember now which one, that if you educate a man you are teaching an individual, but if you educate a woman you are teaching a whole family.

There are strong links between population size and female education, as well as GDP. Women feel safer in having fewer babies if they have confidence that those babies will live beyond childhood

Gender inequality can still make me furious. All inequality really, where people are treated badly because of some perceived group they are in

hazarding a guess at 4 portions, it is here. The nearest I could find to lasagna sheets was a wholegrain version

I think we might be there a very long time if we debate stuff! Looking forward to a face to face conversation tho, debate or no

that's not too huge in calories as their main meal of the day is it?

Hmmmmmn maybe leave it in as a weekend special treat? :)

it contains 4 and a half of the 5 a day and it would be served with peas too :)

  • Hi folks, have made the apple curd this afternoon - I think curd and jar were too hot when decanted as the seal on the lid is so tight i cant open it, will have to wait for bob!!!!

Can I just ask if anyone else is having snags getting 'real' people to think that this plan is workable? Dont get me wrong I for one do not need convincing I am fully behind this plan and everything it is trying to achieve, my food shopping is reflecting my newly acquired knowledge and I am cooking to my hearts content and very happy to make bread etc etc. but what I would love to do is educate someone 'real' and make them realise that it really is possible to reduce shopping bills and possibly have a healthier eating plan to boot - maybe Im just not good at explaining - has anyone been able to make someone see the light?

  • I know that the ultimate aim would be to educate Bob and Shirley - but I just thought if I could try out a couple of people it would give me some idea of possible resistance from Bob and Shirley iykwim

Nope - I dont read it...but would be good of you if you could scan and send that article to me please:)

Yep..heard that about "good idea to educate women - helps with this". Roll on the male Pill - any minute now:D - 'twill be another large step forward:D (in the face of a lot of FEmale opposition I suspect from a controversial article by a married woman with children I read the other day - and agree with her point made as to why many women will dislike men using this).
