to me too, but I knew people were worried, so I wanted to understand further.
Lesley if you have any spare minutes could you calculate the nutrition in that other carrot cake idea I posted a few posts ago? it makes 16 little portions.
Don't worry if you are busy, I quite understand :A

:T:T:T I'm so glad you liked it lesley! What apples did you use?
I'm thinking shirley will use cooking apples so I reckon I'll need a touch more sweetness than a braeburnAlso did you find the skins pureed down nicely?
xxx
I used some of those nameless, not nasty, not particularly nice apples that proliferate these days. They were £1 for a big bag at the greengrocer, 1.5kg I think. It was really satisfying only having to dispose of the stalk. Everything whizzed up easily and beautifully. The only thing I was concerned about was the little flakes of hardness around the core, as I tasted it these were apparent. But I left it to the morning to see if they were noticable on toast and they weren't. They may have softened overnight as well as when I checked with a tsp full I didn't notice them this morning. I was going to push it through a sieve if it was a problem
I think it would be lovely and sharp using cooking apples and personally wouldn't increase the sugar, but then I like sharp apples
It frustrates the hell out of me that I live in the garden of England and I have to make a point of searching out English apples or any other English or British produce. One of the reasons that I use the local green grocer is that he sells local stuff as often as he can. The woman in there said recently that they would sell a lot more English apples if they could but they always look like someone has played football with them. She gave me half a dozen Cox for 0p (love that price!) that were bashed looking when I was buying some recently0 -

here you go. Not too sure about the accuracy of the milk powder nutrition that was on their database but haven't got any in to check

I use UHT skimmed milk at home but take Tesco light choice dried milk to work for my tea. Ingredients are just dried skimmed mild and vitamin A & D. I think it tastes fine and think it tastes as good as the real thing. Saves me a ton of money as 1 pot will last 5-6 months for just over a quid.Boots Card - £17.53, Nectar Points - £15.06 - *Saving for Chrimbo*2015 Savings Fund - £2575.000

another thought about sugars, which I think will be controversial, but here goes anyway...
Lots of us agree that we must give our kids Fresh fruit!
And we must not let them fill up on cakes, which are full of nasty sugars. Right?
OK so at the moment poor shirley believes this, and so she buys things like this:
it's £2 which seems like a lot, so she hopes Jenny and Jason won't devour the whole thing at one go. Maybe she's successful, maybe they have half each.
£1 a snack, but at least she feels ok about the 5 a day thingie and the not too much sugar thingie.... Hurrah!
Now along comes weezl and co's food planner.
It has carrot cake with oozy topping as a snack. Shirley is worried.
What about the sugars?
In half the above melon pack, 6 of those cubes, (not super filling): 27.36g sugar
In a slice of this (photo originally at weezl blog):
9.1g sugar. And it's 94p cheaper :money::money::money::money:

that really might catch their interest, both debt and obesity are such hot topics at the moment. I'm not sure how we could spin Shirley & Bob's predicament to catch govt interest in our plan, but obesity? Could be the hook, or you never know, pitched the right way, we might get govt interested in people helping themselves, never govt's strong point0 -

well, there is the fructose re glucose thing, and the vits and minerals in the fruit. But a good point re overall sugar
Nutrionists now are beginning to say that it should be vegetables and fruit, not so much emphasis on the fruit because of the sugars as too much sugar, even in fruit is not a good thing. I even remember a study somewhere that showed a link between some Indian gents getting diabetes and the orange juice they sipped all day long on the verandah because of the heat0 -
(yes, I'm MB!)
I do understand what you're saying on sugars, and I guess when you look at a mere 4 bags of sugar for the whole month, that really means we're not having NEARLY as much as perceived. However, I think your analogy of the melon v carrot cake is unfair. White sugar is refined & process and we learn that it's "bad" for you. Fruit sugar is fructose and natural and "okay" for you. Perhaps someone with a better grasp at nutrition and the implications of the different kinds of sugars can comment further, but this is what/s drilled into our heads as children.
Plus there's natural sugars in the apples & raisins (ESPECIALLY the raisins), so it's a bit unfair to say they're ONLY eating 2kg. I'm not sure what my opinion is, those are just thoughts I've had...
but I think this falls into a lot of the other discussions we've had - these "sweet" snacks provide the base to the £100 plan and if B&S want to spend more money, they can sub in fresh fruit or something not cake-y (nuts or seeds come to mind) if they so choose...top 2013 wins: iPad, £50 dental care, £50 sportswear, £50 Nectar GC, £300 B&Q GC; jewellery, Bumbo, 12xPringles, 2xDiesel EDT, £25 Morrisons, £50 Loch Fyne

ok chaps I'm really stymied now on further meal planner action until I can be clearer on this omega issue, so I'll go do some more real life jobs until a researchy minded type bod turns up!
things are progressing really nicely here on project 'get ready for Kester'. We've done a stockpile shop, decluttered 2 rooms, finished the shopping for my hospital bag if needed...
you can get a lot done if you all get up at 5
