  • Hi again does anyone think a remark is an option i have the paper already it has to be in by tuesday my daughter got 97 top q4 i know i mite be clutching at straws 1 more mark puts her in 3rd quintile and it seems most schools are saying first 3 quintiles ? the score can go down apparently so pulling my hair out will i wont i? your thoughts wold be a great help
  • When AQE first sent out information on quintiles- before the tests were sat they showed us a sample of what the scores might be in the 5 quintiles. When the actual scores were known ,when we received our results, the quintiles were almost identical but not quite- I suppose we have to assume this is a coincidence.

If it was me I wouldn't - you'd never forgive yourself if the score went down. Just put as many schools as you can on the form and fingers crossed.

ONLY do it if you are confident that the marks are wrong. This is a nightmare situation and I feel for you. But this is a personal decision between you, your half and your kiddiwink. Has the Principal been any use in giving advice..?
  • hi i dont think it would make any difference,as they are all going in rank order,so your score isn't much difference in mine . i think it is a good score i have heard of a lot getting similar scores and they are all putting down for grammar schools. xxx
  • Can't understand how AQE reckon that there are 1400 in each quintile, as you quite rightly state the quintiles were announced long before the test were taken. Surely if 100 equates to the average score most scores acheived will be in and around 100, with few in the highest and lowest quintile, therefore all scores of 100 +/- are good and should secure a grammar school place. ???
  • havent met principal yet tuesday morning apparently not much help! husband and i were going to then our son her twin brother who got 104 said dont do it mum! so i think we wont !! just v anxious thanks
  • Is quintile not just a statistician's way of saying "fifth" in the same way that a quartile is a fourth?

Meaning that a fifth of all children taking the test (1400) are in each quintile.

This would explain the fact that the scores changed after the results as before the test results were known they could only be estimates.
  • thanks had not realised the numbers had changed for the boundaries of each quintile.that makes a little more sense.their estimates must have been very close!!

    Hi there,
been reading the forum since the results first came out, thought it was about time I added to it.

I've been emailing the AQE office for some answers, my son's score was not as high as we had expected, he is an August birthday, and looks like he is set for the local high school, its been difficult getting over the disappointment of the score but think he his ok (well certainly not showing it), and once I completed his form I felt we had to move on. I'd asked the AQE office to share his raw scores with me to be able to make sense of the mark he received and if they could also give me the calculation for the standardised score - I was shocked at the answer I received.

Extract from email reply from AQE office:-
The formula for converting from raw scores to the age standardised one is a
large, complicated one - which I don't understand and wouldn't be able to
send to you. But it is highly sophisticated and very accurate. It was
applied to each of the assessments separately, before the best two scores
    were taken.

What confidence can you take from that statement that its accurate!!!

From the scores I have heard, there certainly seems to be a lot of younger children scoring the big scores, and the older children not doing so well.

Personally I don't agree with age standardisation, if they are going to do that they also have to make it fair across the sexes, girls are more advanced than boys at this stage in their lives. The children have all been at school for the same length of time so should be treated equally. I have a daughter coming up who has a July birthday so will have to do exceptionally well to beat the June birthdays!!! Don't know if I'd look on it any differently if I was at the young end of the school year!

Anyone else think older children have had a hard time in this exam?

Quit your yapping. Kids born in June are almost a yr younger than someone born on July and deserve a few extra points. From what I understand its minimal anyway.

As for the quintiles - the mark recorded is basically a rank and not the actual score in the test. Thats how they could predict it before hand.
  • Does each quintile not contain 20% of the scores acheived not the number of pupils who acheived them. i fear that the AQE don't understand their own marking system.
