I don't really think the radio plays any kind of music I like much anymore even tho my taste is eclectic and runs from Sex Pistols to Sinatra...I think I would find a whole music programme hard to come by. Not really into politics or current affairs and certainly not sport..

You can listen to the radio on-line. It sounds like Radio 2 might just be what you want - they play lots of oldies.

Can people please give me these sites where you can download tv progs ? I know the BBC does it, but the OH likes his soaps and theyre not on BBC. He might try it and if it works ok then we won't renew the license because thats all he watches and I dont watch tv at all.

I don't want to go OT here, but I have just posted in the Techie forum, a question on how to watch tv via the computer.
I use http://www.tvcatchup.com/ lots of TV and Radio channels. It's live streaming though so I don't know if you would still need a TV licence?

    ,

I too live in the Peak District, and although I know it's not a small place, I have broadband, and I thought most areas in the PD were able to get this. I can only think of one or two places that can't have it.

We can't get DAB though, so I listen through the TV. Never really watch telly that much, so wouldn't miss it apart from the access it give me to different radio stations.

Like someone said about Scotland, 99% of the UK can get broadband, it's just a pain if you're one of the forgotten individuals who make up the other 1% - actually it adds up to quite a few. Most villages in the Peak Park are on bb, it's just the outlying farms etc. My problem and that of my neighbours is line length apparently, as it has to come across the fields and loses too much signal. That and distance from the exchange. But there are still places, including the whole of Flash and lot of other Staffs Moorlands areas that can't get it.

no you don't :) the radio licence was done away with quite a while ago

& you only need a TV licence if you're watching or recording television programmes as they're being broadcast

so if all you're doing is watching some catchup via the internet, then you don't need a licence, nor do you need one if all you use your telly for is gaming & watching DVDs

I only know all that because I was without a licence for a few years

I only used my telly for DVDs & gaming, & I did a bit of investigation because I didn't want to get into trouble :o & found that the licence isn't for the receiving equipment, it's for what you use it for

I have a licence now because my son's back living with me & likes to watch Dave & Takeshi's Castle & stuff like that, but as soon as he moves on the cable will be cancelled

I've been tv-free for 18 months now. I moved into a new place and thought "let's just try not having a tv for a bit". I thought I'd last a few months, but I'm still going strong! I have intermittent urges to get a tv, but i'm put off by the cost!
And anyway, I can watch pretty much every thing I want on catch-up services like iPlayer!

  • Time for me to get my oar in, couldn't resist after reading the OP! I am a radio man now, BBC Radio 2 & 4 mainly and 5 live. If you look around the schedules there are some really good programmes on the wireless as my dad calls it!

Interesting to read how many people watch TV via the Internet aswell, I use BBC iplayer a fair bit because I'm a big fan of BBC4, E4 & More4...other than that its a good book
