Love our DAB radio. Have it on most of the day when I'm at home....R4, R7 & Planet Rock. Didn't have a TV when we were kids, my parents still don't. I have TV & a Virgin media package but still listen to loads of radio. I could give up TV if I could keep the DAB. I also listen to a lot of audio books on CD borrowed from the library. Currenly listening to Nick Hornby's latest novel 'Juliet naked' & really enjoying that.2025's challenges: 1) To fill our 10 Savings Pots to their healthiest level ever
2) To read 100 books (36/100) 3) The Shrinking of Foxgloves 6.5kg/30kg

Not sure where you live but I bet the views are stunning.
Something I would rather have than dab radio and the iplayer any day.
Yours
Calley
I know, and of course you're right - I wouldn't change it for anything. But I can't help sometimes feeling hard done by when you all talk about iplayers and broadband and buses and gas heating and so on!!! I've grouched enough about country life on another thread so no more whining. Peak Dist by the way, so not exactly back of beyond!
Anyway, Bottom Line was interesting, thanks to PP for recommending that, I'm getting into it! Also reading more, life of Enoch Powell at the moment - a most unattractive man in every way, but his use of language is brilliant - in fact I wouldn't mind one of his quotes on my grave, except that I wouldn't want to be associated with him in any way.

I think people who live in cities need to have all the frills to make life bearable. Without all that, nobody would live in a town at all, ever.0

Haha, very good. Lots of people however, come to visit and like it for a day or so, then find the lack of streetlights, and strange night noises, no shops, constant welly-wearing etc (and now no telly!!) very unnerving. People ask me whether I'm scared. What of? The dark?
I also dread it when you see those magazine articles about hideaway places in the UK for holidays, where not many people go. So far my particular patch hasn't been invaded by holiday makers attracted by such articles, but it's only a matter of time. Prince Charles comes here though!!!
Anyway, this is way off topic. I can see that without telly I'm going to be on here far more than before, maybe not such a great spin off!

There's nothing in the dark in empty countryside that will hurt you. Can't say that about a city street
Can you watch dvds and tapes ?

Nah, can't sit still that long. Half hour tv progs were about my limit, one hour for very special things, like the Shetland programme I managed to see this week. Would rather be doing which is why the radio is going to be great.

We've been telly free now for a month and we love it!
We have classic FM on all day long, not too much chatter, and of course, lovely music0 -
Sorry cant recommend any radio shows as havent listened to it for more years than I care to remember..but your post brought to mind our homeless friend. He has recently been given a room in a shared house and he is really bored as he doesnt have a tv. We have tried to lend him/buy him from charity shops (the free ones from papers which they charge 10p for) dvds which he watches on his laptop. The guy isnt a reader unlike me so misses his tv more than I would.
Hope you find some useful tip offs here.I do hear that things like Just A Minute are meant to be good. What Would Bill Buchanan Do?0 -

Masses of tvs seem to come up on freecycle in my area, which might help him. Might also be worth asking for dvds on freecycle too, it's the kind of thing that I'm sure would elicit a useful response.
Good luck to him (and you for being a good friend)0 -
