Hi All
I am on o2 20meg broadband. I have moved since i took up the contract and our connection is now around 5meg as we are further from the exchange.
With Virgin i believe this does not matter, however peak times are slower.
I have been offered VM 10meg free for 6 months and then £12.50 for the following 6 months, it is a 12 month contract. They have also upgraded me to the large TV package, free for 12 months.
Wanted to know what sort of speeds i can expect and does it get really slow. I used to be with Tiscali BB and it was like dial up at times!

It will depend on how much you use the broadband.
On Size L (the 10Mb package) you'll get throttled if you download more than 3GB during 10am to 3pm, or if you download more than 1.5GB between 4pm and 9pm.
You'll also be throttled if you upload more than 800MB between 3pm and 8pm. Upload should only affect you if you do a lot of FTP (of large files) or file sharing.
You'd then cut your speed cut by 75% for about 5 hours... 750Kb/s (this would feel noticeably slow).

Would VM do you a deal on the Broadband XXL ? That is truly unlimited and doesn't suffer from any speed throttling.
Most people aren't affected by VM speed throttling, but if you are then it can be pretty annoying.0 -
how often do you use the internet? I was paying 20 quid per month on broadband with talk talk, then i bought a 30 quid dongle from virgin which I top up 15 quid if and when I need to and its been great but then I dont down load music film or video I just look at websites and e-mail. My phone I have cut back to a 5 quid top up on a mobile per week. I told my friends I am saving up and they understand.it may not be a realistic option for everyone though.if you cant do anything else save

We do alot of streaming, normally on 2 laptops for totaling around 4 to 5 hours max.
We do download stuf but could probably do that later, but we do not download that much. Maybe 10 tracks per week.
No phone line.
We use network and net too much for a dongle, main PC and 3 laptops!
Thanks for the replies.0 -
I'm on Virgin 10Mb, just did a check: 9.86 download, 0.48 upload.
I find it very reliable and speeds are always about that level.0 -

On Thursday I upgraded frojm 3Mb to 8Mb, (do they do it that quick?).
I am on Virgin ADSL
This is my test result. am I right in thinking that the upload speed of 7.24Mb/s is the actual speed?
What is the upload, 0.70Mb/s?
What is the PING 33ms?
Don`t steal - the Government doesn`t like the competition0 -

That's your download speed not your upload speed - but yes it's the actual speed you are getting on that one site. What is the upload, 0.70Mb/s?

Meant download:o
So for the 8Mb/s I am supposed too be receiving it is about right?
Are the Upload and Ping about right? 0.70 Upload seems slow compared with 7.24 download, or is that how it works?Don`t steal - the Government doesn`t like the competition0 -

Upload is always much less than download. Each provider has its own upload max.
Ping depends very much on the site you are visiting - wouldn't worry about it unless you are a gamer.0
