I wouldn't worry too much about it, come the next election there won't be any PCSO's.

Wow, that's a bit harsh isnt it!? Since when has this been announced?

Even so, I probably wont be a PCSO by the time this happens anyway! I will have hopefully joined the regulars!

This debate came up at a training day I was on the other day. It wont happen overnight. Government will not make 16,000 people redundant, simple as.

  • I'm guessing Officer_Dibble doesn't have much time for PCSOs, personally I think you do a good job (although there are a few jobsworths that make the job more difficult but having said that I could name a few bobbies that are the same) Hope you get in the regulars soon!

What gives you that idea? :rotfl:

With all due respect, I could not care less if some officer holds a grudge against us, as long as that officer isnt on my neighbourhood team. I am very lucky in that I work on a great team under a fantastic sergeant who is very pro-active and lets us get involved with most things.

In theory they're not a bad thing.

But Matt gave a figure of 16000 on starting pay alone there could have been 11000 full trained police officers.

What would the public have prefered their money spent on?

This is probably the tenth time I have typed this response now. I have had many of debates about PCSO's cost Vs PC cost. When people say the same thing as what you have just said, they forget pay rises / pensions etc etc.

I cannot get paid any more than 25k a year, no matter how long I stay as a PCSO.

However, a PC can earn up to 35k in my force. A staggering 10k more. Then factor in the bigger pension that a PC will be entitled to. Then you have more uniform, longer training etc etc. The list can go on.........

TBH I don't think the pay is fair, I know a couple of years ago PCSO's were coming out with about £200 more than me a month after their allowances and I didn't see that as fair as we don't get entitled breaks, overtime had to be taken as CTO not paid and to be fair we did a hell of a lot more work. BUT since we got PCSO's my workload came down a lot. Now I'm back on response it doesn't really affect me now.

Cheers! I didnt apply for the PCSO role anyway, I applied for the PC role. Passed the assessment centre overall but failed on the written. Nothing to do with my content, but they couldnt understand my hand writing  !!!! I knew I should have written in block capitals!

They offered me the PCSO role instead, which I gladly accepted as its given me a fantastic insight into the work that's involved, and the jobs not bad too!

I shall be applying again in September.
  • That's what a lot of Officers have done and you're right it is a good insight and at least you know what to expect, a lot of probationers haven't got a clue about the real world. Out of interest what force?
