Wow I'm so pleased to hear more stories of happily ever after tail-less cats:)
he's ventured out from under the bed into the spare room and from the smell he's been downstairs to the litter tray. I've checked he hasn't messed himself and he seems quite clean, although I also discovered he's got less feeling in the tail as I touched the end to lift it up (expecting a growl) and got nothing:(
2k is a lot of money- I too would be and indeed am likely to be worshipping pet insurance!
I'm booking him into the vets on Friday evening for a check up and flea stuff and if his tail is no better I will overtake the appointment with that.
Thank you for his hugs! I actually got a mini hugthis morningIf you aim for the moon if you miss at least you will land among the stars!0 -
I think if he has'nt been to toilet at some point today either number 1 or 2 its worth contacting the vet to let them know, i know my neighbours cat made a big squeeling noise when he first tried to do a number 2 as he was in pain.. The vet said she did the best thing letting them know as its not good for the cat not to go to the toilet for days
Just my advice hope you dont think im sticking my nose in x

Lucy my childhood cat (she lived to 21 years old & most of them tail-less) had an accident whilst I was away on holiday & parents said they thought she had gone mad - it wasn't but bad tail damage. Once tail removed (it was a lovely bushy tail but not working & giving her pain once damaged) she had a many happy years & still climbed trees etc - parents didn't allow a catflap so she still entered the kitchen via a window tail-less once the stump had healed. She was a very contented cat & it didn't affect her quality of life at all (she never did much in the way of live catch even when she had a tail)0

I will errrr poke around in the litter tray to check his toilet habits tonight- lovely job! (I might convince oh to do that!).
Thank you for the advice, I would have left it till Saturday if you hadn't said something and now I will take him tomorrow if needs be.
The vet wouldn't remove his tail if it was ok would they? They would and can check on an xray whether it's alive? If you aim for the moon if you miss at least you will land among the stars!0 -

My cat had her stump amputated this time last year due to cancer - she only had a 2 inch tail anyway (adopted from the RSPCA that way).
It was quite an expensive op approx £2K but that's because it had to be done by a specialist vet due to the risks of nerve damage.
I was praising insurance to the skies after that.
She has had no ill effects from the operation, she was most glad to have the bucket off her head and be allowed outside again.
and it was fine.0 -

An x-ray wont show if somethings alive or not, it just shows bones. Hes damaged the nerves and they dont show up on an x-ray. They might say to leave it for a few more days to see what happens. Any longer and they might think its best just to remove it, especially if its causing him pain and hes not able to toilet properly because of it.What matters most is how well you walk through the fire0 -
I'm not sure how they would check if the tail could be saved but generally vets do what is in the cat's best interests and would save it if possible/useful.0

Do you need to poke around in the tray?? does your litter not clump or c an you not see the litter has been disturbered, i know with mine that when they go a number 2 its reeks until removed.. I dont think they do an xray on the tail, its more of a waiting game and possibly seeing how the tail reacts to a pinch (from the vet) it took my neighbours cat at least 2/3 weeks till there was a slight improvement and it was decided that the tail didnt need to be removed. The toilet thing affected him more as it caused him great discomfort, and had to be given a enema in the end to help. Think it must be easier to have loose bowel movement as less painful. Is he eating ok today??? Has he been out from under the bed more also??
Think it was be a good idea to ring your vet as you can to ask advice about his going toilet, it cant hurtMum of 2 adorable children & 2 cheeky cats who were born on 23.04.2009 :rotfl:0 -
sorry bout Boots but things should be fine. when i was little my cat lost it's tail in an accident (door slammed on it) and he adapted quickly and eventually lived to 22 years old - he was just a bit extra careful on walls and ledges
