  • 3 years ago, our cat thought a nice warm car engine was a good place for a nap - to cut a long story short when we started the car her tail got caught in the fan belt () - she disappeared for a week then came back with her tail literally hanging off.

She had an amputation, and is left with a little stump - like a rabbit :D. She has had absolutely no ill-effects whatsoever, it hasn't affected her balance at all. In fact she still uses her "stump" like a proper tail - holding it up in a greeting, and tucking it neatly to the side when she sits down. Although it's not very nice when she rubs it up my bare leg when I'm dishing out her food :D

Her op cost about £350 - and our vet is pretty expensive.

awwww thank you all for your lovely tales (geddit?)... they've made me feel so much better.

He's still under the bed but he did venture down the stairs for a little bit this morning - just to walk around and go back up again!

He does look so sorry for himself but it's great to hear it can't get worse. (unless he refuses to eat and so doesn't eat the antibiotics:eek:)

Suki's coped for about 7 years without a leg so I'm sure a tail's a doddle to deal with! It has added effect - more cuddles for the poor ickle injured kitty which she exploits shamelessly.

yes agreed a tail should be a doddle! I also have to remember he hasn't actually lost it yet, although it is still flopping behind him (I was expecting a miricle over night).

Boots will be dreading the extra cuddles he can't prevent ;) he'd rather not get the cuddles, although he is loving the posh food!

I've got a tail-less cat ... and have had for 10 years ... I don't know how she lost it as we rescued her like this. Since then, she's lost ears (bushes / fights / who knows), has a very very saggy belly that almost touches the floor (all skin??), when we first rescued her she was bald, so now has patchy fur. She really is the ugliest, but in our eyes, most beautiful cat in the world!!!!

My Grandads cat just has a little stump. Some cruel person kicked the cat up the backside and broke it's tail. They had thought he had been run over to start with as he had a bloody face too, but his claws were intact, so the vet said No, someone beat him up

He is fine and dandy without his tail, suits him actually. Best hunter ever, my Grandad has nice dead animals to clear off his doorstep most days!

Is it pills you have to give him? Shove it into a lump of mild cheddar easy peasy.

Your cat will be fine with no tail. My nanas cat lost its tail in an accident, and he was fine. Lived happily to a grand old age :)
  • Hi,

My cat had her stump amputated this time last year due to cancer - she only had a 2 inch tail anyway (adopted from the RSPCA that way).

It was quite an expensive op approx £2K but that's because it had to be done by a specialist vet due to the risks of nerve damage.

I was praising insurance to the skies after that.

She has had no ill effects from the operation, she was most glad to have the bucket off her head and be allowed outside again.
Proud to be dealing with my debts
