  • hi all just after some advice really. i was a customer of nationwide and found that i had a bank charge which then sprieled out of control as they can do and was getting cahrges of up to £200 a week at some point this went on for years and i eventually closed the account. This put me in financial hardship as all my money was going on bank charges every week so i was having to get loans which i am still struggling to pay off and keep my 3 children out of the 850 wage i get every month. I sent to nationwide for all my statement/ list of charges and got back a big pack of numbers and formulas that i do not understand, they dont make any sence at some point in the statement it say £6000 paid in and £10000 paid out - i have never had money like that in or out of my account at any point in my life, does anybody have any ideas where i could go from here - i have rang and they were not helpful and i have wrote a letter stating that all i wanted was a list of charges that were put on my account while i was a customer but have had no reply and it has been nearly 9 weeks since i sent the letter recorded delivery.

Any advice where i can go from here would be great

    Thanks Rhian
  • Have spent a week reading this site and sorted a number of letters to send recorded delivery on Saturday for PPI and charges to bank and credit cards.

Have received my charges from Barclays however they have only given me back to 2006 because that is six years from the present even though the account was froze when I went into debt management in 2009. Is this right or can they go back further.

I have written on the growns of hardship as I am on a debt management problem until 2020 paying off 55k of debt (don't ask) - marriage failure followed under the pressure.

    Any advice

    Hi everyone
I have recently contacted 'Santander' regarding bank charges reclaim, I received rapid response to my original data request so thought I would provide address for future help to anyone
    SANTANDER
    PO BOX 1109
    BRADFORD
    BD1 5ZJ
Also there is no need to enclose a £10 cheque to obtain information required as they do not charge for this service, I received statements DATED - from when Santander first took over from Alliance & Leicester up until present statement.
Also enclosed with statements was a brief letter from 'Business Manager' stating the following sentence----
AS YOU HAVE ASKED FOR COPIES OF YOUR BANK STATEMENTS, WE ASSUME THIS IS TO ENABLE YOU TO RECONCILE YOUR BANK CHARGES. THE TRANSACTIONAL INFORMATION YOU REQUIRE HAS BEEN FORWARDED TO YOU FREE OF CHARGE, IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS PLEASE CALL US ON THE ABOVE NUMBER...
i received all this positive response within 10 days
(I was shocked % very impressed)

Template letter number 2 :was sent to same address.
Following guidelines on martins help pages I requested they refund all the charges totalling £300 (enclosed was highlighted charges on statements)

They were also provided with full explanation of my personal situation including how I had been affected by severe financial hardship.

This letter was sent on 18th January and still as of todays date I unfortunately haven't received any further correspondence from Santander whatsoever.....

Please can someone confirm my next step: Is it now I send the. letter making them aware that I am intending to take my complaint to the financial ombudsman services???

Just wanna make sure I am dealing with this correctly
Many thanks for any help, pointing me in right direction

If you sent your letter by recorded check if it's been rcvd/signed for and send them a copy with a polite note on the bottom asking for a reply within 14 days of recpt of letter (keeping a copy of the copy!). If not, just redate and send the letter again - recorded. I feel that threatening FOS at this stage may scupper any chance of a refund.

Write again and see what they say. Some banks can supply longer than 6 years.

Have they not sent you any actual copy statements yet showing your actual charges? I notice you mentioned something about a statement showing incomings and outgoings
Does your recorded delivery letter show as having actually been received/signed for?

If you feel you haven't got all the information held about you contact the Information Commissioners Office.

I am about to write to bank about some charges and off to read the material and dig out the statements but i have not yet come accross the answer to my question. Can anyone help?

If you are claiming financial hardship do you get aim for reduced rate for the charges or can you ask for all of it back?

    Thanks in advance

  • Lloyds TSB
    GBP 210
    Amount they paid: GBP105
The story: I closed an interest free overdraft with Lloyds a couple of years ago as I did not want to keep going overdrawn. Used my card a few months after that and didn't realise I had gone 70 pounds into an 'unauthorised overdraft'. I paid the amount off + more within 2 weeks however was charged 210 pounds in charges just for that period. I wrote a letter in Jan 2011 however never received a response. Found the advice on this page and decided to write a letter 2 weeks ago using the 're-opening complaint' section and advised Lloyds of my legal standing and that I would approach the Ombudsman if the matter was not resolved satisfactorily. Within 10 days I had received a refund of 105 pounds - haven't received the letter from them yet but am quite happy with the result! Many thanks Money Saving Experts, will use this site for all future financial queries!
  • Hello Moneysavers,
I'm a long time reader of the site but this is the first time I'm posting, today, after finding out that £86 of charges have been taken from my account (taking me over my overdraft limit by £86). I know I am now going to be charged again next month for going over my overdraft limit (?)
I was wondering if anyone could give me some advice.

I believe I have a very strong hardship case against my bank to try to claim back nearly £8000 in charges (incl. interest) a lot of which is due to snowballed charges. I have read and re-read Martins tips but am still a little confused. My account was with Abbey National when all my Charges problems started, but they haven't stopped (unfortunately) since Abbey was taken over by Santander. I have years of Abbey statements filed away and will be writing to Santander for a list of charges but does anyone know if I can claim back charges made by Abbey, from Santander?

any help or success stories would be greatly appreciated.

Hell Can I start a new complaint I originally wrote to the Yorkshire bank approx 4 years ago and was told they would not pay,I sat back waiting for the court case to be settled and did nothing.
I do not have copies of the old letter I sent, but I was hoping to start or open a new case as I'm still recieving charges.
Or have I lost all hope of claiming because I did not follow it up at the time
