    You're too late.
    You can only claim back charges if you are currently in financial hardship and even then, it would probably only be for 6 months or so.

    By financial hardship, this means you're struggling to pay basic bills and you have no extras coming out like mobile phone contracts, subscription tv etc.

    • The story: This was an old closed account which I had daily £30 charges on and was put further into debt. Ok so I didnt get the full payout but at the moment £112 is better than nothing! :D

    Well done on your success. However, your comments suggest you have done something that no-one else has. This thread isnt about packaged bank account charges. So, I will ignore those. However, you say you have been refunded due to excessive overdraft charges. This would make you first known person where that has happened since the court case. Can you clarify the actual reason they gave for refund as I suspect it wasnt due to them being excessive.

  • Hi, I have just followed your guidelines on how to reclaim bank charges. For the last 3 years I have struggled financially, since living alone. I completed the template on your site asking for a refund of my bank charges, I currently pay approx £100 to £120 a month in charges, which considerably impacts on by ability to pay my bills and rely on pay day loans each month too.
    I wrote to Barclays last week asking for them to refund, they have quickly replied giving me £50 credit for the time spent reviewing and offered me my bank charges dating back to January 2014, totalling £604.50.
    They have said that they have acted entirely as they should and that it was my responsibility to manage my account (which I totally accept). I have to sign to say I agree to this & that it won't claim for any more charges in the future.
    They have suggested if I am not happy to go to the ombudsman.
    The big question is, should I accept?

    Snap their hands off - their offer is very generous.
  • Read the money saving expert email this Wednesday morning,used the template letter provided and sent a letter that day. Bank rang me Thursday evening but I was unable to speak to them. They called me back first thing Friday and today I have £2,300 in my account that I wasn't expecting. I never follow up these type of things, and really didn't think anything would come of it. However, I can honestly say, it was one of the most worthwhile ten minutes I've spent in a long time..... Thank you moneysaving expert!:)

    The FOS has no ability to force the bank to refund any bank charges. Just to ensure they have treated you fairly.

    Going back 6 months is a common method used by banks for those in hardship. So, what you have is in the ballpark of expectation.

    My Story
    I received my weekly email from MSE last week (w/c 28/07/14) and thought I would approach Lloyds Bank, with whom I closed my current a/c's with in 2011, as they put me through 'charge hell', and caused no end of financial stress and difficulties for me. I originally opened my a/c's with them in 2003.


    I wanted to test the waters first before requesting my statements (or transactions), so I submitted an online complaint referral on 30/07/14 - which was succinct and to the point, but constructive and factual at the same time.


    2 days later a gentleman made contact with on 01/08/14, & said he would look into my complaint. On 02/08/14 he called me back, and agreed that I had suffered financial difficulty due to the bank charges between 2008 and 2011, stating he could see I was hardly making any debit card transactions because of the lack of disposal income the charges were imposing, and that my spending was only at Tescos for fuel/food etc....


    He offered me £2,000 as a 'refund' not compensation for the charges, which I accepted.


    I did question why my charges didn't go back as far as 2003, to which he said the charges on my a/c's then were correctly applied and didn't cause me financial hardship.


    He did want to know what debts I had now, as they were keen to pay the refund into another a/c, but I refused and it was paid into my savings a/c immediately.


    For less then 30mins on my laptop and phone combined, I got £2k refunded back!
