Any facts to back up your claims about it being ineffective?
I went through a full body scanner in Amsterdam (not sure if it is/was the same thing that has now been introduced at Heathrow) and isnt that where the latest bomber went through?

So what you are saying is that unless I allow myself to be strip-searched I am not allowed to travel by air? That doesn't sound like freedom of movement to me.

As far as I am aware, this has always been the case - plenty of people are identified (or possibly randomly selected) as candidates for a strip search and if you refuse then you aren't allowed to fly. I don't know what the problem is with this kind of scanning, given that airport security has pretty much always been allowed to do whatever's necessary to ensure that they are not allowing someone who poses a risk to others onto a plane and refuse permission to fly to anyone who doesn't allow them to do so.
Freedom of movement isn't the right to travel wherever you want without conforming to the processes in place for such travel - for instance, you need a passport to travel between countries, but the requirement for a passport doesn't undermine your right to freedom of movement.

surely alternative checks could (should?) be available, if someone has grounds to refuse the scanners? (religious, personal / medical etc..)

    personal freedom ends here.

Refuse , for ANY reason , to go thru a scanner ..No flight.

I don't care about your religious reasons . medical problems etc etc
I don't want to sit on a plane with you.

My safety is worth more than your 'minor' peccadillo.

There is a alternative if you do not want to use the scanners do not fly, only reason is if there is a very valid medical reason. Religious reasons do not factor in, and if reports are to be believed it is mainly muslims who are refusing to use them the very religion that has caused these to be introduced so they certainly should not be able to refuse nor should anyone.

You have personal freedom not to fly, I prefer not to be blown up whilst im on a plane.

2 Muslim women have already refused the scan and subsequently been refused to fly.

I wondered how long it would be before it infringed upon someone's religion ;)

The irony is it is the very religion of Al Qaeda....... That won't stop the usual leftie rants though:

    Mr L, its a complete non-story. in some respects, isn't it ?
The rules have changed and if you don't want to play by the new rules, then you can't play.
That they were wimmin, or follow a prticular religion is, IMO, irrelevant.

    Absolutely.

What is good to hear though is that regardless of any religion/sex/other the rules laid down are being consistently enforced.

If you want the checks to be completely random do what they do in some workplaces were staff have random drug/drink tests when arriving at work. You press a button and a computer random turns a light red or green. If its green carry on, if its red you get checked. As computers can't see gender or skin colour how much more random could you get.
