Hi, I wonder if anyone can offer advice. My daughter has been given some cash to buy a car so she's been looking at Gumtree. She's found a car but apparently the owners"are leaving the country and want a quick sale" - in like a cuppula days. I did the daddy thing and "expressed concern". However, I was told to do a text reg thing to to see if there might be problems. This forum didn't improve my confidence in these services one iota.
Given the sellers have left it a little late to sell I suspect they're after someone who isn't street wise. Should she walk away or run?
Can anyone suggest some where to go or could someone do a check on my behalf. The car reg is --- e005 hsu ---- Thanks0 -
Tie her to her bed until they have left the country, this is a common scam !
Watch out for them advertising another vehicle under a similar ad in the next few weeks !0 -
The reg will checkout fine on a HPI check.
But they usually get the money transferred in some unsafe manner. The car may even exist. They maybe genuine and moving. They may take deposits off 20+ people and then vanish.
Look at the car. Do the HPI check whilst your there a proper one. HPI, RAC, AA.
You pay cash and take the car away. Anything other than that then run away.
Mate recently bought a car off someone thats moving abroad and it all went well. But you need to be careful.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -
Hi, please be carefully going for cheaper checks as these are just not thorough enough, for full peace of mind, to check all information, finance VIN you generally pay £19.99, or with vehicle check uk you can purchase this or get five full checks including finance for £25, so only £5 each car, bargain.0

I know this is an old post but the advice may help others.
There are various levels of vehicle check but beware of some checks that don't give you full info. Some cheap checks don't allow you to check the vehicle vin to help ensure its not cloned (stolen) vehicle.
Text checks don't give a lot of info because of the character limit and often require you to send multiple texts and pay more than the price advertised. Always check the vehicles service history and if you can contact the garages to make sure this is a genuine stamp.
Check mots and make sure the logbook is the new type as the Dvla had hundreds of thousands of old style logbooks stolen.
Make sure you get a receipt. There is good printable one at car check uk.0 -

many thx0 -
Oh dear.. not filled with confidence. Was hoping to buy a car LG56BAV and the man on the phone said he was leaving the country (like the lovely man previously said). He was quite cool and wasn't flustered, where's the best place for a proper HPI check (cheaply if possible) and how can you check or look for VIN or BIN(??) numbers?? Oh gawd..... me fears the scammers :-(0
