  • For £400 if it runs well enough and has MoT it wouldn't seem like you have much to loose. At worst you take a £400 hit, but far better than if something happened if you spent £1000 on a newer car!

hahahaha... reminds me of a funny story.

My afforementioned Volvo needed some welding work which was going to cost me £320 and so it was laid up as the tax had expired. So I thought I'd buy a car with a nice long MOT on it...

I saw a Rover 100 for £300 and managed to beat the man down to 250 and drove it away there and then. The following morning (a sunday) a DVLA contractor came round and clamped it and gave me 24 hours to turn up with a valid tax disc and £80 for the fine. however, because the 24 hours expired at 7am on the monday they came along and towed it before I even had chance to get to the post office let alone my insurance company! It was now going to cost me £300 plus the tax which I couldn't afford so I told them just to crush it.

Now, things could have been really nasty had it not been for the fact that the numpty who sold it to me wrote my christian name as my surname and my middle name as my first name.

one word of caution on the old polos ...they dont have brake servos , so the brakes need a really firm shove to stop the car

not really a problem if you dont race around and get used it , but they do feel a little scary compared to modern cars

I had a similar escape when I parked my SORN vehicle on the road. I got a letter from DVLA saying it was parked on the road on 13th of Feb (they meant the 3rd). Luckily I had a letter from the scrapyard proving it had been crushed on the 10th.

  • The Reason I have Seat Ibiza is because I love the VW range and it has the old VW gearbox and engine inside the spanish shell.

VW are very reliable so If as described and is your cup of tea then yeah.

Polo's are great wee cars the brand new ones (diesel) can do 100 miles to the gallon.

yes easily if you get out and push it, because even VW don't admit to those kind of figures.

I think the quoted figure is it consumes 1 litre of fuel per 100 kilomiles (no idea what that is in MPG and can't be assed working it out). The new ones are nothing like those back in the 80's, they're a pile of junk nowadays by comparison (dumbing down through cost cutting).

thats 62 miles per litre, is it not 100 kilometers per gallon? because that works out at 280 mile per gallon!
