I was shown a Valkswagen (Polo I think just a little car). It has no rust ANYWHERE (it was put on a ramp so i could have a good look). Engine lovely and clean and upholstery immaculate. Apart from the paintwork having lost its shine its like a new car, only 40,000 miles on the clock. the only thing going against it is its age. It is C registration. From this description should I buy it? Cost is £400. Any advice or pointers appreciated. Thanks.

If it is as good as your description indicates, has no major faults and decent length MOT, I would say that you cannot really go wrong at that money.

The older ones were arguably better made than the newer ones. As you describe it it sounds more like it could be a show car after a bit of a polish up. I am guessing perhaps it has been garaged a number of years?

I would have gone for it, but that would only be my personal choice and does not give any guarantee it won't fall to bits in 2 months time and need everything replaced :)

    Its the vOlkswagen mot'd?

Also, dont worry about the paintwork. A good cutting polish, polish and wax will sort it out.

Be careful it isn't an old style speedo and the mileage hasn't gone around the clock. (40,000 could actually be 140,000)

From the description sounds good enough, if it has a good mot, £400 sounds ok.

older polos are hard as nails ...if the body is rust free then mech bits are cheap enough anyway

the speedos so record 100's as well so it may be geuine ...mines on 180 on the orig enigine anyway so i wouldnt worry

    good cheap little cars

I don't think that even that's a problem to be honest. Most 'modern' cars can go round the clock a few times now. My K reg Volvo is on 120K and still going as well as the day it was built and apart from a new starter and a bit of welding I haven't had to spend a penny on it.

It has a twelve month MOT, tyres in excellent condition. Cannot remember how much road tax left. I was shown the vehicle when my nissan micra n reg failed its MOT. the nissan was gonna cost £400 - £500 just to repair excessive corrosion. It then needs road tax and new tyres. I figured that at £400 if a car only lasts one year i have got my moneys worth.

  • I suspect my old Ford r reg van was on its third round. It had only done 50 miles when I had it scrapped.
