I don't think I'll ever understand this fear of big cars.
OFFS. get over yourself.
The O/P doesnt want to drive a larger car.
Deal with it.0 -

Just buy a cheap banger with low insurance just now until you need one for the time you start breeding.
If money is so tight and insurance is so high it would suggest you are quite young. In the mean time you will be building up some no claims discount and in a few years time more options will open up for you.
Take life one step at time. (Hope that explains it more helpfully)
As for being young, I am 29 and my other half is 31. I don't want a cheap banger, I want something that I can drive in comfort for now. I can afford the £1700 insurance, I just don't want to spend anymore than that.0 -
We were in almost an identical position to the OP a few years ago. We had a three year old Y plate 1.2 clio and wanted something bigger, that would be practical for the two of us but also if we had kids - had a budget of about £8k.
We decided to go for (as suggested by a few people already) a 1.6 Zetec Focus. The car was great as it felt like a big improvement on the Clio, cheap to run/insure/fuel and was great when two kids came along (ours not some random other persons:eek:). Had it for five years and had no trouble with it at all.
I think they must have been a lot cheaper back in 03/04 though as we managed to get a 6 month old 03 plate for £8.2k- although that was a bit of a bargain.0 -
A second hand Mondeo (ten years old) to build up the no claims discount, will have plenty of room, be reliable, and get you used to parking a larger car.0

Nope- money isn't that tight. As I said, we are paying for the car upfront.

£1700 for insurance seems a lot for someone of your age.0 -

Insurance companies use more than age to determine the cost of a policy.
Besides we are getting way off topic here, the op has clearly stated they don't want a large car or something with high insurance premiums. Maybe people should start helping them out rather than criticise everything they post?0 -
I can park a larger car without any problem! I just don't have the room in our street to park a large car! Finding a space is bad enough as most people have two cars, and they are often tiny spaces. A large car into a 2.5m space just doesn't fit. Why is their an assumption that I can't physically park a large car?
I think you really want a GeeWizz if the parking is this tight, and even then you may struggle!;)
How about a nice Toyota Corolla, only 4.2 metres long, the same size as the Focus, better rear visibility IMO.0 -
Apparently there have been a massive increase in car crime where I live. Before I had my current Clio (which is insured through work) I was paying £700 for a soft top car. All the insurers have blamed the increase on car crime.0
