What car would you buy with £8k?

VW Polo - you wont get a Golf for that price but the Polos are nice.
How would you not get a golf for 8K?
There are 62 golfs on autotrader alone that are less than 3 years old and less than 8K - and thats before you take into account the discount you could get from a dealer on say a car at £8.5K or £9K.

A Golf will be way too expensive to insure I would expect, despite it being a lovely car.
what about a slightly older Octavia? much better feel all round than the Fabia, and the 1.9 diesel engine is quite economical. of course the Octy could be pricey to insure for you. I've managed to get mine fully comp for under £300 with over 5 yrs NCD. I went from a Saab to an Octavia, and have never been happier.0 -

Golf starts at gp 8, octavia starts at gp 7.
I cant see there being a massive amount of a difference.0 -
I could be deid in a year or two but I won't be getting a hearse
My point being you are looking at two different market sectors.
As for the suggestions of bigger cars like the Octavia and Mazda6. I think they are a bit too big for me to drive. We need something inbetween a Clio (and a Popl) and an octavia. The Focus is looking good- it was what we had been thinking of.0 -
Too big to drive? They're only a few inches larger than your Clio.
If it were up to me, I'd force all learners to be taught in a Volvo 940 estate.0 -
They are huge- I park on the street at home and finding a space to park a Clio is hard enough, never mind the nightmare of the work car park I can drive big cars I just don't need one.0

Although my money would be on a big car too, I think a few inches is quite an understatement.
Just as an example:
2001 Clio 3773mm long
2004 Octavia 4507mm long
Source 1 & 2This is my signature. There are many like it, but this one is mine.0 -
I never thought the Fabia was an ugly car- the Roomster was however.
Agree with what has been said but a left field choice is the Fiat Bravo- Fiat struggle a bit in this sector with competition but the Bravo is a decent used buy as it was keenly priced to help sales and usually has a fair number of features. The reputation of Fiat and reliability was always the achillies but it they did well in the last driver power.
Kia Ceed is another good call, perhaps a Honda Civic if there are good ones for that money?0 -

Kia Ceed =Yes; Honda Civic ( latest shape ) = No, the rear visibility is a design disaster of style over practicality.
A couple more options, Hyundai 120 or a Kia Rio, could buy either, brand new or pre - registered for around the 8k mark.
Long warranties with both.0
