There's a certain amount of expense that can't be excused on these beasties - they are intelligent 3 port switches - 1 uplink, 1 phone, 1 PC. They have to be able to handle tagging for VLANs and the like, so you're limited to how much you can shave the price - the 1Gb and 100Mb prices will come close together of course, but they're always going to be a relatively expensive option... You're comparing the price to a switch plus a VOIP phone - typically the switch option is only available on the more expensive phone options because its not worth it for the cheap models...

I'm looking forward to moving to the new campus in July. We've been planning the new building for a long long time and I'm fed up holding stuff together with sticky tape and prayers in the old place.
