Huge thanks for all the pointers. I think I've got it clear now (but I reserve the right to come back with yet another question if need be :D).

Need to start the hard bit now....actually spending the cash, lol.

    Cheers everyone.

Yes, bringing work home a bit. But where else can I put my years of experience into practice ??

As I did a lot myself, it was quite cheap - I certainly would not get a cabling contractor in for that amount !!

I hear that - actually I'm not the most practical minded person ever and running that cable and terminating it has probably tripled my "hands on" contribution to the house renovation.:o

Rather than go to all the huge trouble of cabling up your house have you considered ethernet over power?

    http://www.netgear.co.uk/wallplugged_ethernet_bridge_xe102.php

It might work out cheaper when you consider cabling, ripping up floors, switches etc.
while ethernet over power is probably better than normal wireless (especially with the signal being blocked by walls etc) It is still a half duplex technology and still limited to 200mbps (100 each way).
The more hosts and devices on it - the worse it will perform, If you have the option of hardwiring cables then its always got to be the most scalable option

Got another embarrassingly stupid question........I may need to get Sky put into another bedroom, I can easily run the 2 cables required, from the room to the dish but I'll need a phone socket in this room too. (The Sky box is supposed to be connected to the phone line for the first 12 months.)

So....does the Cat6 cable fit the bill for this too? Can I just run an extra length of the cat6 from the switch to a phone jack wall plate (<no idea what the right term is, sorry)?

I'm confused over how the phone works over this? Have I got it all wrong?

I have a phone junction box downstairs that I could run a length of ordinary phone wire from it to the room but if the cat 6 is suitable then I'd rather stick with that. *really miss that confused smilie*. :o

Would this kind of thing do? I thought a double back box with 2 ethernet modules, a blank plate and a phone socket module would do? That way I'd have a connection for the ps3, the pc and the phone?

(My floor is up and there's no plasterboard on the walls right now so I can run anything anywhere.)

True that he probably doesn't need two cables per socket but I'm renovating my house at the moment and putting in network cable, and I've gone for doubles. ...

Part of my attitude I suspect is because networking is my day job and I'm just used to having doubles run everywhere. I'm not saying I'm right, just how I see things!

I think that doubles actually stem from the last days of Token Ring networks. These could be done with Cat5 cable, but you had to have doubles to each connection point from the patch panel and lots of patch cables to connect the ring at the patch panel. Buildings would be wired this way as an each way bet on 10baseT [ethernet as we know it] and Token ring. Over time I think that original idea has been traded for the idea of a spare cable.

Perhaps in some places that's true. I know where I work we deliver phone services over the network infrastructure, so a double per desk makes a lot of sense.

Ugh Token Ring. That's a memory I hoped never to revive.

I think the days of phones on 50V lines are nearly over. Once the phone plug delivers TCP/IP, the computer will plug into the phone and the phone into the wall and you wont need doubles. Or it will all be mobiles for speech. Or something.

I'm in the middle of a new build out right now, 10Gb backbone, VOIP with unified comms, suspended floor throughout the building to make cabling easier, all the salad. We considered the idea of a phone that has a through-port switch for the PC but the price they want for a 1Gb PC connection instead of a 100Mb has to be seen to be believed. It's cheaper to drop another Cat6a cable & double the port count in the switch cabinets than it is to buy a phone with a 1Gb through connection. We're only going to be using those where running 2 cables to each desk turned out to be a problem.

The economics will change. Quickly. I have not worked in a proper office for a few years now, so when I suggested a throughport phone, I was idly speculating. Interesting to see it exists. The price is high because of a novelty premium on the technology. For a long time the price difference between 1G and 100M network hardware has been trivial - really adding only a few% to hardware costs, not multiplying them. I expect by the time your building is commissioned, the economics will make your infrastructure look outdated.
