The point I'm trying to get across is that saying "without the user's permission" isn't what you mean.

Thats true, Seems strange why some transactions take longer than others to go through.

Just been reading this post and here is why on debit cards take longer to get the money out of someones account, here is reasons why,

1)Let say i went to agros and spent on my card 100 pound, sometimes the amount is taken stright away however its all down to the companys fincial payroll consultacy, (or in english means agros bank its self weather its hsbc lloyds ect, but you get the idea)

Now i have spent the money and its still there, that could be still there because the bank already know about the transaction form your card details and there systems have not updated as usally or there anti-fraud team are checking your account, banks like abbey do that alot because i have a visa electron debit card and the first day i got i had to ring 0845 number to get it unblocked, Because i tried to use the card and the first party fraud team placed a block on the card,

In general terms banks do it so they cant be sued or have the customer who not that bright to ring up and say xxx has gone missing, but when they leave the money alone they update the following day around 12 midnight and take the money then,

it all depends on when the company ask for it, if the company does not ask for the money it falls off or just returned to the account but that is just rare unless of course items someone has been purchased and returned to store,

the reason banks do it like that is because with debit cards there is not much protection like with credit cards, there is protection of course like one i know about is if you booked for a vip room on a airport holiday away and it was mis booked your fully entitled to refund if you book only by a electron card and dont have to pay the cc charge of 2% like easy jet or them budget air flights charge, nightmere to all?

i would not take your money out ive done that once when i was with halifax, and it went all wrong and did the exact way your thinking off, i had to pay them another 140 on top when they tried to send me a court demand letter, but i had that reversed because i found out the bank offical staff who placed the money ion my account paid in 278 quid by mis keying in the infomation and not my 478 pounds making my account in balance,

anyway hope that helps im new here

Ive noticed that when using my debit cards visa debit/visa electron/maestro. Some companys do not take the money out instantly.

For instance, i goto asda.com buy £100 shopping, check my balance and the £100 is not removed for 4 days.

    So QUESTION:
If someone used my card without my authorization, say bought a sat nav at asda.com for £100 on 1/1/2010, if i cancelled that very card THE SAME DAY. Would the transaction still go through?
Yes it probably will. Because the card was used on that same day you cancelled it. Banks usually update the balance a couple of hours or even days after the transaction. Your card has been charged of the amount but it is still on hold, probably for review or something. It usually happens.
