Ive noticed that when using my debit cards visa debit/visa electron/maestro. Some companys do not take the money out instantly.

For instance, i goto asda.com buy £100 shopping, check my balance and the £100 is not removed for 4 days.

So QUESTION:
If someone used my card without my authorization, say bought a sat nav at asda.com for £100 on 1/1/2010, if i cancelled that very card THE SAME DAY. Would the transaction still go through?

    Yes, it would
  • Hi,

Just to ellaborate, the person you purchased the item off, in this case ASDA has about 6 months to take the money. Which is quite annoying, in most cases they take the money within the 3 days.

Sometimes they don't i have had cases where it can take nearly two weeks, and it comes as a bit of a shock when you think you have money you really dont.

Best keep track of any card payments you make

    Hope this helps

Yes i know some places take a while to take the funds out which is annoying like you say.

But my question is would it effect the transaction if the card was cancelled the same day the transaction was taken place?

Why if they take the funds out a week later? If they can use a debit card thats cancelled then whats the point in cancelling a card?

Because the transaction occurred when the card wasn't cancelled. The shop tell the bank when the transaction took place.

If this didn't happen, there would be a huge gap where people would be able to defraud shops by cancelling their cards as soon as they've made a large purchase.

How would somebody use a Debit Card without the users authority?

Thats true, Seems strange why some transactions take longer than others to go through.

It was an example. And could easily happen.
