Guys - I work with both HSBC and FD and neither bank has ANY plans to make this compulsory!

According to the digital solutions team of FD they plan on introducing this into their T&Cs that you must use the software to bank with them and if you don't any hacks into your bank account won't be refunded.

    Which is it?

There are all sorts of good reasons why some customers (probably a minority, but still a significant minority) won't be able (or willing) to use this Rapport software.

    They could be using:
    • One of the many flavours of Linux
    • Any other incompatible browser/os combination
    • An iPhone or similar web enabled device
    • A work LAN where downloads are blocked
Agree -- I think internet banking caters to a lot of people who wish to be able to do their banking from work and/or internet caf!s (when travelling, for example) and in these places installing applications is typically disallowed. I would hope that First Direct, who I have perceived to be positioning themselves as a bank for people on the forefront of technology adoption, would not want to disenfranchise that very group.

    Re: Trusteer Rapport Security Software

Thank you for your message regarding Trusteer Rapport Security Software.

We urge all our customers to use this additional protection, where possible. However, you will not be 'blocked' from Internet Banking if you do not have it.

Logging on from an internet cafe can be notoriously unsafe and is never a recommended way of accessing Internet Banking. We do recognise that emergency access may sometimes be required. In such cases please try to download and install the Rapport software first before accessing your bank accounts.

Your network administrator may permit users to download this security application. If you find that you are prevented from installing it, then it would be worth raising the matter with the network's security team or administrator. If this proves difficult, then at least you have the comfort of knowing that you are logging on from a tightly managed, and therefore relatively safe, environment.

Please let us know if you require anything further.

I am impressed with Rapport and will keep it on my system.

However, there is another program which seems to do the same thing, PrevX SafeOnline. It isn't free though -- but there is a free trial. I have tried using PrevX SafeOnline and Trusteer Rapport together on one system and they don't conflict.

    Anyone else tried this program?

Edit. Works with IE, Firefox, Opera, Google Chrome
  • James_N - Nope don't work for or represent Trusteer in any way. Yes am a first time poster but we've all got to start somewhere.

David78 - As I understand it if you have downloaded Rapport from Bank X and then start to enter a card number belonging to Bank X into a website Rapport should pick this up and protect that site - whether or not that means the arrow should turn green I don't know. Would make sense though.

I'm stuffed then because I only use my (very secure) work PC to log into my First Direct accounts and I'm unable to download any non-authorised software onto it.

Are you authorised to use that PC for non-work use?

If not you shouldn't be using it.

If you are then it should be possible to get the software authorised. Your employer is being unreasonable if he won't.

It's true what you're saying. The arrow turns green and stays green once the site is initially protected. It will protect any site, not just those financial institutions that are promoting it. For instance, e-bay and web based e mail accounts can be protected, and any site where you're submitting personal details and bank details.

I have 14 sites protected, there is no loss in computer performance, and I consider it an aid to the anti virus programme I already have.

We absolutely 'get' that many business networks will prevent downloads - and we have no wish to 'disenfranchise' users of minority operating systems!

Having tested the latest version of Rapport, and then employed a third-party security company to re-test it, we are comfortable that it will help keep our customers safer from phishing and spyware than not using it...

I'm also with David78 on this and have seen no slowdown on any of 3 PC's (including a small netbook) that I have installed Rapport to...

    Cheers,

    Nick
    @ Nick

It looks like you work for HSBC. I just installed Rapport on my home PC, at HSBC's request, and I immediately got some very disconcerting behaviour - when trying to make an online payment from my HBSC bank account, the cursor randomly jumped out of the box into which I was trying to type the payment amount, into another box. And it slowed the site down so much (without this being immediately obvious to me) that, once everything was entered correctly, I had to hit the confirm button TWICE before the transaction was accepted.

I'm glad to see you say that it is not mandatory to use the software, because I want to uninstall it asap. Is this official? Is there anything on HSBC's website to confirm that it is not mandatory, and that I will not be penalised if I don't use it?
  • Hiya,

I was quite suprised when this popped up and asked me if i wanted to install Rapoor. I didnt even know anything about it. Had had No communication fro HSBC about it. I looked it up and asked my friends who are pretty pc savvy who said it was fine.

I put it on there and its actaully really good espeically for free software.

I havent noticed any slow down but my pc is very high spec, it will run blimmin everything , honestly i managed to get crysis at a highest settings with only a slight lag i couldnt believe it.....sorry im rambling. Yer to be honest if it had slowed it down i don't think my pc would reflect that.

    The software seems quite small.

Maybe trying running a ccleaner to tidy up and installs and unistalls etc , that my solve some root issues.

To sum up i think its a good bit of software but some commuincation from HSBC as to what it is would have been nice.

I got a message from HSBC saying that they would be introducing it, and a few days later there it was waiting to be installed. It doesn't seem to have affected my PC, but to be honest our internet has so many issues we probably wouldn't realise what the cause was anyway

It also gave me a heads up the first time that I entered my bank details on a non-banking site, which was nice, and since then it hasn't prompted me for that site again which I assume means that it's now "recognised" it as being acceptable to me.

I might be gullible (okay, I know I am) but maybe it really does what it says on the tin...?
I'm learning little by little... I'll get there one day!!!

  • I downloaded & installed the Trusteer Rapoort Software from the FD site; it eventually loaded and worked.
As a result all my internet connections became so slow that they were ususable. I removed it via the uninstall facility on the control Panel which resulted in me regaining normal internet access!
I'm running Vista Premium with Avast anti virus on an O2 connection.
The problem was so severe I couldn't be bothered to make contact with FD support. I'll wait for another day when improvements are made.
Hats off though to FD for providing the option but it clearly has issues with some peoples OS software or/and anti virus programs.
