Diesel vs Petrol

Loving the irony....Are you drunk? If you put a blower on a diesel, you need to put 1 on a petrol. You have to compare apples with apples.
Then admits that the nearest rival to the 140BHP 2.0TDI is actually- A 1.4 litre Petrol, not a 2.0 litre
- And has a Turbo charger AND a Supercharger.
If I were a car salesman I would recommend the 1.4TSI 160 as an alternative to the 140bhp TDI
So much for his hypothesis that you simply must compare like with like otherwise you could only possibly be 'drunk'
Talk about changing your tune. :rotfl:0 -
For the record, i think thats the way engines will go in the future. I read somewhere that there are massive extra costs going to be added to diesels in the future to reduce emissions, so the way forward will be small turbo'd petrol cars, possibly with hybrid capability - but thats maybe 5 years down the line before it starts to become commonplace.
i would agree this will be the near future before full electric. a small efficient engine powering a generator supplying a traction motor with current....work permit granted!0 -

Erm, so much for nit picking certain points of my post to prove your own misinterpreted point
You will clearly see that I compared a £24k GOLF 2.0TDI to a £24k Golf 2.0 GTI proving my point. If I had £24k to spend I could choose either the petrol or the diesel varient. Both have the same capacity engine, both have a turbo bolted on, both costing the same but the petrol being the far better performer in respects to performance due to its 40bhp advantage.
I was then asked to downscale to the 140bhp version and what petrol varient was available for the same amount of money and which was better. So yes compare apples with apples. There is no point in comparing turbo vs N/A is the point I was getting at.
Talk about manipulating a post:rotfl:0 -

Hey, i was yanking your chain. You were right in what you were saying - the nearest equivalent of 140BHP TDI is the 160BHP petrol version, which just happens to be a 1.4 Turbo Supercharged version.
Its about roughly equivalent power outputs, not engine size or turbos / superchargers etc.0 -
What fun we will have when the power source is sorted out and we start debating electric vs. petrol vs. diesel.
Easy answer of course, electric buries them all 100ft under but does it silently and without character.
For example, there's a diesel Audi R8, who cares? There are electric cars based on a Lotus Elise, again who cares? The soul of the car lies in its beating petrol powered internal combustion engine. When that goes, the car as something with spirit, passion, and life will die.0 -
Which in my eyes means that petrol wins. Electric cars are soulless, evil contraptions that in most cases look pretty ugly too. Diesels sound like tractors. Only petrol cars are the cars you dream about when you're a kid.

I think its sad that you cant see past a petrol engine to look at the bigger picture.
Plus how many petrolheads really 'live the ideal'? So many say oh oh theres simply nothing can match the sound of a v8 and it turns out they drive something really dull.
There was one guy on pistonheads on a similar debate said he couldnt possibly accept anything less than the sound of a v8 therefore he would never drive a diesel - it turned out he'd a 1.4 206... :rotfl:0 -
What ever we think it is looking reasonably certain we will be driving electric cars one day. They don't have to look ugly or be slow.
I quite like these, not exactly every day transport and price tag though http://www.teslamotors.com/buy/buyshowroom.php
I don't see any reason why every day cars cannot be electric and more desirable to look at.0 -

So after that speech, i can see how passionate you are about petrol engines - what engine are you running? A v8? maybe a tasty italian v6?
I'm sure its something with real soul. :cool:0 -

It all depends on whether you think a petrol internal combusion engine is an amazing piece of pure design or just a set of necessary historial compromises to arrive at an acceptable solution.
Personally I really don't care what the power source is.Happy chappy0 -

+1
Doesnt bother me. Its about driveability, and meeting my needs.0
