AFAIK you don't have to take out the HD subscription, howver they will charge more for the install.
Virgin have not got many HD channels though have they?

Did I read yesterday that Sky now have 2.1m of their 9.7m customers on HD? If they can move the rest over, that will generate an extra £120 pa per customer, or £912m overall.
So with a billion of extra turnover on the horizon, it's not surprising that they're going to push HD as the default Sky option. Probably by pushing up the price of SD to make HD seem better value.

Customers can get the HD without taking the HD subscription - if they do take the HD subscription the box will be free - if they dont there will be a charge for the box and install.:)

Well, that's me further behind then. I've never had/seen Sky. I was over the moon at getting freeview channels just under 3 years ago... no idea what Sky+ was, but by the time I get round to buying any "Posh telly", there'll have been a lot more changes.

Sky+ doesn't do anything that a Freeview PVR can't do. You just pay a lot more for it.
