It's self assessment. So you can calculate - and pay- the tax without filing! Some people appear to find that easier than actually completing a Return. Sometimes that's because there is more to declare than they wish to.
And HMRC are not good in making determinations ... or imposing daily penalties, in such cases. If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0 -
The system is not letting me in. I can access all other parts but not the SA part.
I need to make an adjustment to my return which I submitted a few days ago, but I can't get back in to make the change. I've been trying several times since yesterday.0 -
Define not letting you in? I'll try to help you the best I can.
Oh and as long as the original is submitted before the deadline you will be fine. As far as I'm aware you have 12 months to amend (i think - the 12 months part)0 -

Well up to yesterday I could log in a amend my SA as I wished .. so far I have logged on several times to make entries to my SA and then finally 2 days ago I submitted it.
I then discovered I had made a wrong entry so I went back in a amended the submitted SA, now it is showing that I owe £5000. But I know I'm only due £2000.
In another thread I was advised to go back and change another entry, so last night i tried to log on and got
"Sorry the system is unavailable, please try again later or contact the HM Revenue & Customs Online Services Helpdesk.Quoting Ref No: xxxxx "
I've tried logging on many times since last night and get same message with different reference numbers.
I've cleared the cache, I've tried another computer but same message.
I would like to amend the SA to show the £2000 instead of £5000... and of course I would like to just pay £2000 instead of £5000.
I'm wondering if I would be ok to just pay the £2000 now even though my submitted SA shows £5000 and amend it after the deadline, or should I pay the £5000 and ask for it back once I get the SA amended ?
Thx for your help, oh and btw I'm in West Lothian too0 -

If you're certain of your figures - pay the £2k. Then amend the Return once you can access it. This will amend the figures retrospectively to 31st Jan due date.

(Only BillPay will allow you to pay by the due date now ..... unless you have a DD Mandate already set with HMRC - and I think you're past the point of no return even that way. So BillPay is the only guarantee)If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0 -
Small world lol. Bet you can guess where I work ...
Yes if you sure that the amount that your due is £2000 then pay it. Mikeyorks is right, use billpay. The date you pay it will be the effective date of payment. You will get a reference number so keep this as proof (in case worst case scenario something goes wrong!
That message normally means that the system has crashed  but TBH ive not heard that it has. It could just be that it is REALLY busy. The help lines open up until 10 tonight aswell.
So pay the money owed, wait until Tuesday(Monday will probably be heaving aswell!) probs and try to amend it. I can't advise on figures unfortunately but I know the SA helpline can. Do you know what section is throwing your return out?

Not sure what you mean by which section is throwing return out ... but I'm just gonna pay the £2k now and leave at that.
Thanks again.0 -
Just a quick note to let you know that there is a problem with the SA form once a submission and amendment has been made.

I knew it ...
Can I claim for stress induced by online faults ? :rotfl:0 -
Wish I had seen this thread earlier. Yes this happened to me too.
Its due to the fault below (which has been evident for a month or so). Useless frankly. I paid what I owed (via Billpay) but no receipt of anything, cant check it online. £1200 has gone from my account and I cant even check anyone received it. Utterly useless.
System Error message on log in – 14 January 2010
We are aware that some customers are receiving a system error message when trying to log in to the online service. The customers affected will have already submitted an original 2008/09 return and an amendment. Our IT partners are investigating this, but due to the 31 January deadline this is unlikely to be resolved until February.
