Why did you wait so long to file online??? Youve had the chance to submit your return since April 2009. I have no sympathy for people who leave it late.
And I have no sympathy for judgmental people. Things are left to the last minute all the time. There is still 3 days to submit the return online. You do not know anyones circumstances so can't really pass comment can you?0 -
I don't know if this will help, but I couldn't get in cos I was typing letters instead of numbers (i instead of 1) - is it worth checking you're not making the same sort of error - I was better once I'd put my specs on0

Radford - before someone snipes that you should wear your glasses I would like to say it IS helpful having the what some folks think is obvious pointed out. Yes I also am of a certain age and frequently think I can see to do things when I can't. Also only on my very new laptop is it now obvious when caps locked etc.
Please could the site become less judgemental - there appears to be alot more sniping around than there used to be. This site is to help and support people not turn them away.0 -
Mind you the Chinese have a saying "If you save a man from drowning, you become responsible for him for the rest of your life".
Hence the tough love responses you sometimes get.
Hope you have managed to swim out of this one OK.0 -

The fine is either £100 or less if the tax due is less. If you have no tax to pay, then any fine imposed will be cancelled once you have filed.
The Tax phone lines are too busy at the moment, and close soon.
On the HMRC website information, it mentions you can appeal the fine if you were late because of an error with the website submission - which should be relevant to the original poster of this thread.
However there is no information that I could find about whether the fine is applied to a late tax return when no tax is owed. I can find several second-hand references to this policy on forums or unnoficial sites, but nothing official.
Any help would be appreciated... negative comments, not so.
Thanks!0 -

If you miss the deadline for your personal tax return, you won’t have to pay the penalty if you pay all of the tax you owe by 31 January.

But I find this is very odd phraseology... it's not very clear!
For example, if someone who did owe tax had missed the deadline to submit, how could they have paid it before the deadline to avoid the penalty? From that angle, this statement doesn't make any sense!0 -

I think your maybe over analysing it a little bit. It means that for instance, Mr A has completed his return and has his calulation ready so he knows the amount due to be paid. He pays this but forgets to click ubmit on the return. Tax paid but return not submitted.
Online Services is open until 10pm (staff dependant) tonight and tomorrow for any technical (online) queries. Just a heads up.0 -
Oh, I did not know you could pay it online before submitting it... It makes more sense in that case!0
