...and we're just a bunch of nattering housewives??!!! Grrrr we have experts in every field on board this thread. I've never 'known' such a helpful group of people - i wonder how many ideas are being generated on the serious thread..?

Hey, sorry to butt in - used to be a photographer and teach it, so here s my two-penneth!!

Agree you will be best using 1.8 aperture as you need as much light as possible but at night you are still going to need a lomg shutter speed and I would say not many people can hand hold less than 1/60th second shutter speed without showing signs of camera shake (which can be mistaken for out of focus). If you want to try less than make sure that your arms are supported, say for example your elbows rested on a wall or table to try and mimic a tripod.

Because you are using a wide aperture then you can still be sharply focused but you have to be very precise as the depth of field is so much smaller.....that means the depth of area which will be in focus. Basically from where-ever you focus the depth of focus varies with the aperture, the smaller your aperture the more will be in focus (best for landscape etc), the larger your aperture the more you can throw out of focus. Sorry too much info......

If you want to be clever you could try and prop the camera and go for a really long shutter speed and capture the arc of stars moving etc.

Not sure is I have helped or hindered.......my main advice would be if you have a digital camera then play around and have fun..... you can sometimes get fantastic results that way! :rotfl:

    Good Luck

thats what i was aiming for but cant explain well , you must have been a good teacher i understood that lol

    Re the nattering housewives nonsense.

I have never come across such a vibrant support network, nor such a helpful group of people - we are not all women here. 'Chattering housewives' don't rise to the challenge like the folks here. Actually, in my view, there is no such thing as a chattering housewife because any 'housewives' that I know are hard-working, focused people with a clear idea of what they want from life.

The person who posted the remark strikes me as lacking a goal in life. Criticising others is a freudian-type thing, usually done by people who blank out their own shortcomings by focusing on those of others.

    None so blind, etc.

Thank you - you have made my day!!! :j:j

I thought I had written that really badly and would confuse everyone .....thank you for making me smile!

Just wish I had some camera equipment still....sold all mine (pre-digital) and can't afford to buy anymore...well not until I have completed this challenge anyway!!:rotfl:

I actually don't feel like i've offered much at all :(. My talent is the online side of flipping tax returns - how fun :rotfl:
  • those comments were rather an overgeneralization too...I too have found this forum very helpful and very inspiring and being a housewife isn't something to be mocked...it is a hard job and there is not a more important job in the world than trying to raise a good and decent next generation .....for me those comments just summed up everything that is bad about forums but thank god we are not all the same and have more thought than to write such drivel....I would hate to be that presumptious and that sad. And god do I hope me being at home raising my boys will mean they will not turn out like that......so happy chattering people, we are doing well and getting lots of ideas out of it!

Thanks, that did make sense - going for a drive to the top of the hill behind where I live so I can lean on the car roof and see if that's any use. I'm such a beginner with this camera so maybe you could both help me understand it a bit better. In fact, maybe I should start using it a bit more! It's just so bloomin heavy and bulky to carry anywhere!

I usually take concert photos (as a fan rather than a pro! got a bit better over the years but still lots to learn with this camera) so I'm not really used to anything else. Like you say, I should just take it out and play with it!

Nikki, I'm doing everything I can to avoid mine - eh, photos of the moon anyone?

Will get down to business later but expect a few posts from me during the night when I'm tearing my hair out, wishing I'd started earlier!!
