right not caught up yet , but need some help , ive got the oppourtunity to buy a lot of books 500ish for £50 , should i buy them ? arrrrrr
where would i keep them till i sold them lol

Think carefully - Ebay is the worst place to sell books in my opinion - Amazon better, but soooooo many are up for 1p or less- take Amazon's cut off and you have very little profit left.
Books that command good prices have to a) be in very good condition, or b) be very rare and out of print (but very desireable by collectors), or c) be on Amazon's current list and the cheapest in the list, or d) be a very collectable 1st edition, or e) be a very expensive, current academic textbook (medical, law, university level etc only- school textbooks are ten a penny so to speak).
Have I put you off yet? Sorry, but I've been selling books for years on Amazon and am a teacher (so I know about most of the current FE books) and an ex bookshop worker too,
Books are just too hard! Sorry to be negative but £50 is a lot of money and it might take years to sell them
    - but of course if there's treasure somewhere in that 500 then you could strike lucky - how would you inspect them?

I've been sat here looking at wholesalers and dropshippers , and really like the idea of having a shop/ market stall with really good quality wooden baby items and toys - with some things ( higher priced) available only to order and smaller items in stock . has anyone ever run a market stall before ?

Wooden toy makers here http://www.toymakersguild.co.uk/ found it whilst researching hth

  • Evening all! Boy but does it take me a while to catch up on here every night! Sounds like everyone is very positive though and thats why I love this thread!

Right, I think I might just have my backside in gear with my list of 'to do', although I won't get a chance to get started till Saturday because I'm working - will just have to get up sharp and get on it with it! If you don't mind too much Hales, could you include my commitments on your next update? thanks! -

    Month
List at least 40 things on eBay -
[STRIKE]rubbish[/STRIKE] 'high quality, surplus to requirements' items from the house
Check out eBay & Gumtree for local sale listings for reselling at a profit

    Week
    Crochet 2 Baby Blankets
    Crochet 5 Baby Hats
Revisit charity shop I was in last Saturday and actually buy the 'new, still in sealed package' bits and bobs that I swithered over and figured I'd never use!

Now, I was looking for a teeny bit of advice, it's something silly but big in the scheme of things.... maybe I should stop waffling and explain!! I honestly think my bits and pieces of are good enough quality to be selling on, but a little voice in my head is saying maybe not...! After all, I've only ever given my offerings away to friends and family, although I do a lot of baby knitting/crochet for charity too. But neither of those groups are likely to turn around and say, yeuch, no thanks!! Soooo what I was thinking was, do you think it's worth my investing some of my initial £100 in buying likeminded items from eBay? I won't be copying them obviously, but I would like to see the quality of the items that I can see are selling well. I'm thinking that if mine aren't up to scratch, then I'll know I have to work to make them so, but if mine are of an equal quality, it'll give me a nice boost in confidence! What do you lovely lot think?

Oh, and can anyone here explain why I hesitated before throwing my dirty socks in the washing machine? :D

    Toots x

Re 500 books for £50 - It's only 10p per book which you could easily get back at a car boot sale if need be, go for it :) Ebay is going back to capped postage which makes it a lot easier to sell on there compared to past few months

On a competely different note, a few boys from my village, before I moved are realising their first single next week and, not advertising for them, but I think it is actually really good! Haven't seen them for years and just got messaged this link http://www.myspace.com/violetbonesmusic what do you think?

Will remove post if anyone thinks I am not allowed to post it, not sure on the rules as I am not making money or advertising for me.

Loved it! Really polished, they looked as if they were pro's. I'd definitely buy their music :T

Edited to add - I've put it in my Facebook status, hope they won't mind.

:j:jWell I have done it - I have started a blog and 'published' my first post. Would love if you could have a look and comment, and maybe even become a follower!!! About to put the link on my profile, if I can figure out how! Thank you to Yukkibear and Joeygrey for their inspiration and support and making me get up and do something!

Well done nixinixi! You gave me just as much encouragement. Can we link blogs somehow? I actually took the plunge and did my first blog last night! It's a very strange feeling - other than posting on a forum or two I've never let anything I've written out in the big wide world before

It's supposed to be a tenner but I've got a discount card which makes it £4.50...I'm happy to buy it as a present for your son though? Getting a volcano in the post would be the coolest thing ever. It really is amazingly cool, and I dropped it and it didn't break! (Not on purpose, I'm just really clumsy tonight, lol). Sned me your address.

Cally - Hope you feel better soon :( I hate being ill, I go mad with boredom.

Of course I will stay on the thread, you can't get rid of me that easily, and it's like a big family :) I look forward to boring you all, lol. And I feel welcome :)

Wow - thank you, that is VERY kind! :j:j

I will send you a PM.

Good to hear you will stay too!! Does this mean you are going!!?:D

Saucy - Thanks :) I've been ill for past 6 years or so but I never know when to actually sit down and take a break to recharge the old batteries, I wear myself out before I realise

Back to ebay - do I sort out books, dvds or fathers day cards first ? Hmm, not tonight though lol, back to banners for me (website made £1 this evening, woohoo)
  • Do you know what the 500 books are? Fiction books as a general rule won't sell unless they are in very good condition. Books that were in the bestseller lists more than a year ago will be joining 100's of others on Amazon and ebay. Can you find out what the books are?

I agree that books are difficult to sell unless you know what you've got. 500 is a LOT of books to store, depending whether they are hardback, paperback, childrens books etc.

Check out the details on Amazon to see what "very good" condition means - so you know what price you might get. If ythe condition stated is inaccurate your ratings will be affected and Amazon suggest a maximum 2% neutral/negative rating - any more than that and people will buy from another seller.

On Amazon, they take 85p for every book you sell - but business sellers don't have to pay this (businesses pay a monthly fee), which means they can sell books for 1p and still make a small profit. If you've a personal account and sell a book for 1p, you end up with £1.41 - which is (I think, off the top of my head) the cost of sending a thin paperback second class... so no money for packing materials and a loss since you've had to pay for the book.

Sorry, not sure if any of that dribble was worth it! I'd really like to know what you decide and how you get on - I'd love to hear that you've found a first edition worth £100, sent a few books to the charity shop and sold the rest on ebay/amazon/green metropolis :D
