Morning All  perhaps I won't be quite so invisible today :o

Off to the hospital this morning, firstly a consultant's appointment (paediatrician) when she'll moan again about Andrew's weight gain and then tell me off for weaning him early, and then a physio appointment when they'll say there's nowt wrong with him and he's doing fine :)

  • Morning all. How is everyone and what have I missed since the weekend? It is the quiet week at work at the mo, so I've been an expert in finding things that need doing. Now I have to do and need to hone my delegation skills to get some help with it all :) (a large proportion of my colleagues will happily sit chatting about football while the rest of us do all the work. Which is probably not unusual, but still )

I home news, Izzy is 100% better from the various bugs that have got her over the past few months, and her appetite is completely recovered too. Over the weekend she ate pretty much constantly, so I suppose she was making up for lost time. She has calmed down a bit now, but still doing really well. She is eating with a spoon by herself, and she likes to eat with a fork too, although it is a bit more difficult. She survived swine flu and booster jabs this week with no ill effects. And she is so close to walking too - she keeps doing a few steps then sitting down, but it is probably about every 5 minutes now, rather than once or twice a day, so it won't be long I'm sure.

And DH is back at work today too, feeling better and back to his normal level of grumpiness, which isn't much better from the level we were at while he was ill, but never mind :rotfl:.

Anyway, job application to finish, lunch to make. And I might brush my hair too, you never know.

Tigs I'm sorry you felt invisible yesterday. I'm aware that expressing seems to unhelpfully fall in neither camp when BF/FF are being discussed. FWIW I think yours and elle's and feelie's experiences of feeding are a) Heroic, and b) frought with all sorts of trickinesses that very few mums would understand.

I hope we didn't make you feel alone.

Of course the physios will say that. I'm coming up to set fire to any that don't!

I know that they're talking at our NICU Parent Forum about setting up support groups - perhaps I should suggest an "EBM Feeding Support" network for Mums both on the unit and afterwards?

  • Just catching up whilst Liam munches on toast

SM - thanks for the text, sorry I didn't reply, I only got it this morning . We're all well. The past few days Liam has really become such a fun little character. He amazes me with so many things and had me & OH in stitches :D Well done for a CLAPPING Jayden. Was Zoe happy with her treat?

Dora – Sorry you’ve fallen again L Please ignore work people. We have met you, we know what a fabulous, lovely person you are. If you are meeting with Jillie I could tag along???

Bruno – I love your El stories :D

Tara – fingers crossed your DD had a settled night. Positive thoughts for you all.

Glam – have you tried J with any finger foods yet. Toast can keep Liam entertained for at least ½ an hour. At first it was generally put in his mouth then thrown on the floor, but he actually eats it now. It co-ordination is fab.

Jam – did you go swimming?

Tigs - hope the appointments go well.

While we are all debating this sensitive subject and being so open, I would like to ask those who FF: "What would have enabled/persuaded you to breastfeed (or continued to breastfeed)". It is something I often wonder about, when thinking about how 'we' (everyone) can help mothers' to breastfeed.

I don’t want to bring up the debate again, I think all I would have said has been posted, but I wanted to give you my reason.

I had planned through pregnancy to try BF but I didn’t want to put myself through pressure/stress to make it work. I was of the opinion if we took to it great, if we didn’t not a problem. I tried in the hospital, but Liam was very groggy from the drugs I was given through labour. I was still very groggy and still in the delivery suite when I was told Liam had low blood sugars and needed a formula top up (we hadn’t actually had a BF at this time and I wasn’t given any support or even asked if we had or hadn’t managed a feed). The formula was given by syringe and then again once I was on the ward. We did attempt BF but there was no interest from Liam. I was kept in for a further 24hrs, and there wasn’t very much support given on the ward (I guess due to low staffing) so we didn’t establish BF and I was just handed a pump. On the second night I had a lovely MW who spent some time with me and we had our one and only bf. When it came to try again, once again I had no luck, the nice MW did come back to try and help again but by this time I was tired, upset and just wanted to go home. The only reason I was still in hospital was because we hadn’t established feeding, either BF or FF. It was playing heavily on my mind that DH was 4 days into his paternity leave and he hadn’t had much time to bond with Liam. I wanted to get us both home so we could start to be a family. I switched to FF so I could then be discharged if Liam fed and took enough for them to be happy.

I still believe that if I had been discharged, and was sent home to try to BF in a relaxed environment with the support of my OH & Mum, I would have stood a better chance, but at the time it was more important to get my family together than to BF.

Sorry, that turned into a long post.
  • Dora - what sad effers feel the need to pass comment on any womans weight, never mind one who recently had a baby. I wouldn't pretend for a moment that you aren't carrying a couple of extra pounds, I am too, but if they can't see the lovely person and wonderful mum that you are then I pity them.

LOL - at least you weren't meant to hear! When I was away at a conference in November a bloke congratulated me on being pregnant again, the cheeky twit  Even when I suggested to him that he ought to shut his mouth before he seriously upset me he continued and then started with 'what have I done' when I walked away and asked people to not let him near me.

Yes, I have a jelly belly, yes, I probably do look pregnant, but what an idiot to just assume and then comment

    Off to catch up properly.

A quick run down of life in MFD towers:

Hubby and I met at the Beefeater on the way home from work and enjoyed a lovely quiet meal where we could chat and have a laugh without the kids interrupting/stealing our attention :D Then got home and MIL was sat with a very tired Benjamin saying 'he is ready for bed' but hadn't put him in the sleepsuit I had laid out for him *rolleyes*

Cue one sleepy baby falling asleep with daddy after his bottle (nice touch!). Popped him down and went to pick out some clothes for hubby to take to hospital....my MIL had stolen my ironing again

I was well pee'd off that she is interfering again and upset that she seems to think that I can't cope (she was stroking my hair telling me I looked tired!!) not that I am a [STRIKE]lazy cow[/STRIKE] busy woman who doesn't feel the need to do every scrap of ironing the minute that it is washed and I am happy to iron as I go.

Anyway, I had a cry (long day, tired, hubby going into hospital, interfering MIL) and hubby threw his coat on and stomped off into the night to collect the washing from his mother and to tell her not to 'help' without asking in future. My hero :A I know it pains him to stand up to his mom (who is really lovely and thinks she is helping) but I was so thrilled that he did.

So I missed out on an hour of time with my hubby, but he got what he wanted out of the night ;)

Dropped him off this morning, complete with tears, and he should be operated on before lunchtime.

Benjamin at the CM, I'm working from home and have just had a sneaky Maccie D's breakfast :o

Ooo - that was longer than I expected :o
