How much are you looking at spending?
What will it be used for? (gaming, freeview, sky etc):idea:0 -
Ok, having read the HDMI wiki, it looks like you are both right - a cable or converter should be fine quality-wise.
And having looked into bingo bango's suggested LG, it doesn't have a DVI socket anyway! The user manual says that you have to use a DVI to HDMI cable for DVI sources, which is no different from any other HDMI-equipped screen...
It's a shame, because that would have made choosing the LG easy. Now I'm back to the "what's the most highly rated 32 inch full HD LCD TV" research again, but I guess that will stop me making any impulse TV purchases for a while!
That's a pity. I know mine has the DVI input.
I'm almost sure I saw a review stating that there was a DVI on this series of models, but can't find it now.
I'll have to check at home to see what model I bought, but I got it for £300 in a Dixons online sale last year. I'll post back later.0 -
It's going to be mainly used as a monitor for a MythTV frontend - so at the moment only SD TV and DVDs, no gaming. I was after full HD mainly so that the resolution was good enough when used to configure the frontend.
The budget is ~£400 though the LG is £369 at Dixons.
The LG model pointed to actually gets pretty good reviews, with only backlight bleed a minor issue (seems a common thing with LG screens).
The one preference I have is to avoid Sony - I have no issues with their quality, but you always pay a premium just for the name.
bingo bango - I did have a read through the user manual and no DVI socket, so it must be something that they cost-cut (understandably) from their lesser models.0 -

Just to clarify that DVI can carry audio. Many PC video cards can splice the S/PDIF audio from a soundcard or motherboard into the digital stream.0

Just to clarify that whilst that 'may' be true (Though I seriously doubt it), there isnt a single tv in existence that would be able to use that data:idea:0 -
Depends more on the card and cable/adapter than the TV, for example nVidia 200 series cards:
With the right hardware "downstream", the TV doesn't know that it is a DVI source rather than HDMI.
Won't let me post a link to wikipedia but just google for dvi audio to hdmi cable and follow the link to wikipedia.org!0 -

So your talking about a DVI 'out' going to a tv with HDMI 'in'?:idea:0 -
Correct! The thread has diverged to dicussing dvi->hdmi and hdmi->dbi etc!0
