Depends more on the card and cable/adapter than the TV, for example nVidia 200 series cards:

With the right hardware "downstream", the TV doesn't know that it is a DVI source rather than HDMI.

Won't let me post a link to wikipedia but just google for dvi audio to hdmi cable and follow the link to wikipedia.org!

o0 thanks for that mike, just read I should be able to get some form of passthrough going on with sound from my X-Fi sound card and Nvidia 295 to get sound down its HDMI output..... will probably take some fiddling but might let me get rid of the separate sound cable I have trailing to my main TV (and maybe even full on Doolby 5.1...) ... something I'll have a play with at home tonight :)

Ok - thanks, I'll look into a converter. I didn't know they were available. (It doesn't worry me that DVI has no sound, as that goes via Toslink to a separate audio processor and speakers).

i have a media pc on my TV, sound via tos and picture via a 10m dvi to hdmi lead from ebay, works perfectly, just set the pc to 1980*1024 resolution and matched the refresh rate to that of the tv

Thanks very much for all the input - an adapter cable should do me Ok.

One last question: do you reckon 100 or 200Hz is worth paying extra for on a 32" LCD panel? It will cost around £50-60 more, all other things being the same.

Youll find that simply by adding 100 or 200Hz they WONT be the same as generally the panels have to be changed to aid the extra speed

    I personally wouldnt bother

Ok - I have a CRT-based TV that is 100Hz, and that definitely is an improvement, but I suspect that with slower pixel response times on LCD screens the issue of screen flicker is less relevant.

Looks like I may after all be buying one of the two LG models suggested (plus a five quid DVI to HDMI cable).

    An improvement how?

At 100Hz the screen flicker seems (to me at least) to be almost imperceptible. At 50Hz it is definitely visible.

But that could just be that the tv itself was inferior
Unless youd seen the exact same tv with 'no' other changes then you cant really say one way or the other

Dont get me wrong, 100hz is no bad thing, but if its done badly it can be far worse than a standard 50Hz tv

  • Actually, I know a fair bit about TV's myself - admittedly not so well up on LCD or plasma, but CRT was once my domain. Fwor is right about the 100hz on CRT models. It really does make a noticeable difference, especially on "still" frames.
Try saying "I have under-a-pound in my wallet" and listen to people react!

We're talking about HD ready or above
